My name is Cathy Kapka and I was born in Kilgore,
Texas in 1953. My husband Bill and I have lived in Allen
for three years. We have a son Cory who is 2 years old. I
attended Robert E. Lee High School and Tyler Junior
College. Before coming to work at Allen Meadows No. 1, I
worked at Levi Strauss and Owens Country Sausage. I
kept children in my home for a year before coming to work
at Allen Meadows. I have worked as a two year old
teacher at Allen Meadows. I love teaching the two year
olds. We are able to help them learn so many new things.
When you have a parent tell you that they appreciate
what you are doing for their child, it makes it all worth it.
Planning things to do with the kids everyday is hard
work, but if the kids enjoy it, then it was worth all of the
time. I believe that a Day care center should be as
pleasant as possible because it makes it a happier place for
children to stay. Parents want a happy place for their
children, and we have one at Allen Meadows.

Another change permits pooling.
That means several small savers
can pool their funds and buy a

jointly.

STUDY YOUR SAVINGS
This is an excellent time for
consumers to re-evaluate their
savings accounts, Mrs. Granov-
sky advises.
Watch the ads and ask your
financial institution how these
rate increases will affect your
savings accounts, she says.

Never allow a child to ride
unrestricted in the front seat of a
motor vehicle, cautions Lillian
Chenoweth, family resource man-
agement specialist with the Texas
Agricultural Extension Service,
The Texas A&M University Sys-
tem.
Starting with his first trip home
from the hospital, he should
occupy a safety seat especially
designed for babies, the specialist
says.
For help in choosing an auto
restraint for a baby, consider the
following features:
•Look for the wdrds “dynamical-
ly tested.” This means that the
restraint has been tested under
simulated crash conditions.
Also, be sure to check that the
restraint has passed such tests.
•Use a restraint appropriate for
the baby’s size with adequate
head and back support.
Some brands are designed for
early use with a baby. They face
rear-ward initially. Later, after
the baby reaches a certain weight,
the seat can be switched to face
forward.
•Look for straps that adjust
easily, are at least one and
one-half inch wide and are very
sturdy.
Check that metal latches do not
come ill direct contact with the
baby’s body.
Avoid aluminum-framed car

You may decide to switch your
funds to another institution.
Here are some questions to ask:
1) What is the annual percentage
rate?
The higher the rate, the greater
the interest-earning potential.
2) What is the annual percentage
yield? The higher the yield, the
more profitable for you, provided
other conditions are to your
advantage.
3) How often is interest
compounded—and what is the
rate per compounding period?
The more often it’s compounded
the higher the rate per period, the
greater the interest.
Be sure you compare daily rates
to daily rates—or quarterly rates
with quarterly rates—or the effect
will be like comparing apples to
oranges.
4) What method is used to
compute savings?
“Day of deposit to day of
withdrawal” or “day-in, day-out”
is the most advantageous system
to consumers.
Some other methods do not
result in maximum earnings.
They include such methods as
“LIFO,” “FIFO” or “low-bal-
ance” methods.
5) When are earnings posted to
the account?
6) When are earnings available to
the customer?
7) What happens if the account is
closed before the end of an
interest-paying period?
Will any interest be lost?
8) Does the account have grace
days?
Graefe days offer a few days extra
interest by paying interest on
amounts for a few days before
they are actually deposited.
9) How many free withdrawals
are permitted each period—and
what is the charge for excess
withdrawals?
Some institutions may charge
anywhere from 25 cents to $1.50
