Now that the campaign against
the liquor traffic is on in this county,
the Reporter offers its pages to the
advocates of both sides for the dis-
cussion of the merits of the question,
subject, however, to this condition:
that all articles have signed to them
the name of the writer. Let us have
a full discussion, that we may cast
an intelligent vote on the question
before us.
When we see small boys with
cigarettes or a quid of tobacco in
their mouths, we wonder if it is gen-
erally known that it is a violation of
a criminal statute to give or sell to a
boy under sixteen years of age, to-
bacco, in any form. We would re-
gret to see one of our citizens com-
pelled to " dig up " $25 for furnish-
ing a boy with the filthy weed.
before the Spanish-American war
the average appropriation for the
war department was $23,000,000.
This year it is $116,000,000. This
is only the financial side of the ques-
tion. We have not the statistics of
the mortality list, and the morality
loss can not be computed. Let us
return to the peace regime as soon
as conditions will allow.
