k,
$ y hour, through the
VERY day you are passing before
La your intimates in review without
your suspecting it. Your clothes, your
morality and all your petty weak-
nesses are judged more or less
austerely, indexed and carefully put
away for future use, should occasion
demand it.
And in the same manner, you, too,
are complacently reviewing the acts,
the spoken words and behavior of
those around you, in the home, in the
office and in the streets.
As a cat watches a mouse, so do
humans watch one another, eager to
pounce, scratch and gulp at the first
favorable opportunity.
Those who flatter, those who sit
with you at the breakfast table are
forming judgment and whetting a
knife to make sure that its edge will
be keen, when it shall be called into
use.
You may be strong, but you must
not offend; you may be a hero but
pray do not let it be known, lest you
be called to judgment and stood up
before the populace in mockery and
reviewed in conformity with the pre-
vailing custom.
To keep honor bright in such an
atmosphere, is indeed a most trying
effort, requiring the meekness of
Moses and the patience of Job.
Kings and peasants, captains and
subalterns are passing each hour be-
fore the reviewing stand, so why
should you quail under the gaze of
sharp eyes and in the presence of
curling lips, half smiling to hide theii
eagerness to pass around the latest
bit of damaging gossip told in conf
dence only an hour ago by one of your
avowed enemies.
Why be peturbed by these running
accompaniments to the hapless songs
of life, alas, too frequent in all grades
of society, from the highest to the
lowest; in the great cities, in the fash-
ionable resorts and in the homely
hamlets?
To avoid the grand review, do some
self-reviewing on your own account.
Under the spell of investigation, pull
the scales from your eyes and go to
your task like a man or a woman un-
willing to admit defeat, but perfectly
willing to be honest.
Do this regularly, ask no man’s
counsel, court the companionship of
open-eyed Faith, and in spite of the
gossips and the stinging objurgations
of your sharp-tongued opponents, you
will sail safely into port with flying
colors.

PHE good old summer time should
I be the time when mother can en-
joy a vacation as well as the rest of
the family. Meals should be simple,
table service made easy to care for,
and every member alloted some tasks
to lighten the work of caring for the
home.
Planning the meals days ahead will
help much, as then leftovers may be
used and meals made attractive.
Onion Salad.
This will be a good one to serve
when having the meal out of doors.
Chop a large mild onion or two with
a tablespoonful of parsley. Add
french dressing made as follows and
serve on crisp lettuce: Take one cup-
ful of oil, one teaspoonful of salt, one-
half teaspoonful of paprika, one-third
cupful of lemon juice, two tablespoon-
fuls of sugar and one-half a can of
tomato soup. Beat well and keep in
a mason jar in the ice chest. This
dressing is good as long as it lasts,
which is a short time, for it is good.

week, Johnny’s father drove that riv-
et; and he will continue to do so un-
til a mechanical device is invented
which can do it as well, if not better
than Johnny’s father.
Three perils have developed from
mass production. Human labor has
become so mechanical that in many
cases men have become mere ma-
chines, with the inevitable danger that
monotonous labor may leave both
mind and heart with little or no de-
sire to take advantage of the leisure
which the five-day week affords. An-
other peril is supplanting man-labor—
machines—thus throwing out of em-
ployment many persons who must seek
labor in less remunerative fields be-
cause their capacity had been limited
to the performance of one particular
act. An equally serious peril is the
possibility of an oversupplied market.
The chairman of the Federal Trade
Commission in a recent address, sug-
gested that “government price control
may be the penalty of industry’s fail-
ure to solve the problem of over-pro-
duction.” The man who labors in the
shop, as well as the stockholder, must
be given a fair return for service
rendered, otherwise prosperity is in
serious peril. Labor is nd longer con-
tent with a mere living wage, but de-
mands a reasonable share of the pros-
perity it helps to produce.

Age of Civilization
Excavations in Palestine revealed
the city of Ur, mentioned in the Book
of Genesis, showing it to have flour-
ished at least 3500 B. C. A great
treasure house and palaces were dis-
covered, also skyscrapers, much delic-
ate and fine jewelry and paintings and
sculpture, showing that civilization is
older than the advent of Christ.

| WHEN WE GROW |
I OLD t
| .----- 3
By DOUGLAS MALLOCH 1
3.*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*---*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*--
T USED to think, when we grew old,
I We’d weep for joys we could not
hold,
But now I know the young possess
The joys of living even less.
Youth flits about from flow’r to
flow’r
And sips the honey of the hour;
But age has found a store more vast.
The endless sweetness of the past.
I used to think, when we grew gray,
The joys of life would slip away.
Now I am old, and now I learn
That it is then that joys return.
The memories of youth are few,
When friends are near, and loves
are new,
But age, with every step it goes,
Meets some old memory it knows.
I used to think, when we grew bent,
The heart would never know content.
But he who follows every bird
The singing kettle never heard.
Many a palace youth designs,
But God is wise and builds us shrines;
And there we come, when we grow
old,
And find the joys we could not hold.
