Long necked girls will be sorry to
hear that collars on waists and jackets
are to be reduced in height.
There-is a fancy-fur, white fans or
for fans of solid black, merely decorat-
ed with gold or silver spangles.
Walking jackets are not as heavily
embroidered as they were, and can be
almost called “severely plain."
Bonnets are small and made of much
richer and more expensive materials
than have heretofore been used.
Any kind of white ruching at the
heck is now obsolete, on the authority
of the most fashionable modistes.
In many cams the evening bodice
for young girls is merely pointed and
filled in with lace, while the sleeve is
entirely omitted or is an olbow. sleeve.
Little boys’ costumes are of velvet
with soft silk blouse vests and wide
collar and cuffs of Irish crochet or any
rich effective lace in Vandyke or tcurs-
Eiffel points.
The long low toque is the popular
hat with young ladies, and when
strings aa added at the end of the
crownit becomes the favorite bonnet
with those who are older.
The e is a decided objection among
mothers to tie adoption of the extreme
decolette styles, worn by the older wo-
men of society, by girls iu their first
or second season.
The use of a collar and cuffs, or
revers of fine knife pleating in tinted ,
silk, the co:or of the frock, or of wliitc
wool in contrast to it, is a feature of
children’s dresses this season.
Bonnets are very small and velvet
rosettes placed directly in front are a
favorite trimming. Flit Alsatian bows
are seen, but oftener a iiule height is
given to the low crown.
Toques for morning and plain wear
are made of the material of the dress,
with velvet folds along the edge ’ and
some box pleats and loops to heighten
the front slightly.

Last winter, so the story is whis-
pered around the circles of upper ten-
dom, a reception was held at the home
of one of society’s local queens. When"
gentlemen in coats of atee -pen cut and
ladies clad in fashion’s triumphs were
courtesying and bowing to the well-
marked measure# f a quadrille, to, a
garter was seen lying upon the floor
amon: the feet of the light-hearted
dancers. Of. course, some Chevalier
Bayard of the ballroom stooped and
picked up the dainty circlet, to keep
until claimed by its fair owner, re-
membering how a king bent down to
regain the Countess of Salisbury's gar-
ter, and made it the badge of England’s
highest order. But no; they politely
stored, while ladies blushed, until the
hostess, discovering the cause, sent a
domestic, who removed the shocking
article upon a dustpan. Ye gods, such
is the nineteenth century, that the
young men would hold themselves pol-
luted by the touch of a silken circlet.

Just how the fashionable womep
who "appear night after night in the
Metropolitan Opera House in New
York clad io a tulle dress, kid gloves
and slippers and a pearl necklace man-
age to escape pneumonia must ever
remain a problem to vex and bother
the doctor and philosopher. These
lovely creatures are certainly endowed
with great endurance, whatever may
be said of their sense. Perhaps, —
Carlyle said, “Vanity is warmer than
down, and pride rivals the robe of er-
mine.” . But to get at facts I put the
question to a pretty little creature who
never read a line"f the sage. .“I don’t
feel cold at all,” she said, “in evening
dress. Just before dre-sing I bathe
my neck, arms and shoulders in gly-
cerine and rose water, and after dry-
ing with a coarse towel, I have my
maid rub me down with alcohol. I
don’t need this at all, but I do it to
please pupa. I think, however, it is a
good idea, for my flesh never gets
goosey, and this is my second season,
and I haven’t had a cold yet. Then I
always wear a very warm wrap in the
carriage, and when I get home I take
a warm bath and go to bed."
Saying Much.
