AUSTIN (AP) — The
Texas Department of
Public Safety has again
warned students looking
forward to spring break to
avoid Mexico due to drug-
related violence.
DPS on Tuesday said the
Mexican government has
made great strides battling
drug cartels. But the public
safety agency for Texas
also urged travelers to
avoid Mexico, based on the
unpredictable nature of
drug cartel violence.
DPS in past years has
raised similar concerns
about spring break travel
south of the border.
DPS Director Steven
McCraw says troopers are
preparing for an increase
of highway traffic as more
students and families take
time off for spring break.
McCraw urged all
travelers to use care and
especially slow down
during bad weather, in
construction areas and
while driving in unfamiliar
areas.
The E.C. Brice Elementary
School National Elementary
Honor Society partnered
with Project Linus by making
blankets to provide comfort
to children who are seriously
ill. The group made over 40
blankets to donate to Project
Linus.

DALLAS (AP) — Two
students and an adult have
been slightly hurt when a
school minibus overturned
on a snowy, icy North Texas
road.
Grand Prairie police say
the Mansfield Independent
School District bus ended
up on its side Wednesday
morning.
Officer Lyle Gensler says
road conditions were a
factor in the single-vehicle
accident. He says the driver,
another adult and two
elementary-age students
were on board. All wore seat
belts.
Ambulances transported
the two children and one
adult to a hospital, to be
checked for minor injuries.
Gensler had no information
on whether the driver was
among those hurt.
The Mansfield ISD says
the wreck involved two
school employees. Details
weren’t immediately released
on a destination.
Sleet and snow also led
to about 90 flights canceled
Wednesday at Dallas-Fort
Worth International Airport.
AUSTIN (AP) — Its all
about the bass, as in fish.
The Texas Parks & Wildlife
Department on Wednesday
asked for the publics help in
choosing a new license place
honoring bass fishing.
The redesigned bass
conservation license plate
will be available this summer.
Proceeds will benefit the
Texas Parks & Wildlife
Department fisheries
programs.
One version includes the
front view of a largemouth
bass. The second option has a
side view of the fish.
Agency officials also ask
voters to fill out a survey on
whether they currently have a
commemorative bass license
plate on a vehicle, trailer or
motorcycle.

GRAND PRAIRIE
(AP) — A 25-year-
old Grand Prairie man
has been charged with
murder in the death of his
grandfather.
Diego Preciado is
accused in the Monday
death of 72-year-old Oscar
Taylor at a Grand Prairie
residence.
Grand Prairie police
haven’t released a motive
in the slaying. They say
the older man likely was
strangled, but the cause of
death is still pending with
the medical examiner’s
office.
Police spokesman Lyle
Gensler says officers were
called to a residence,
where a woman told them
she had tried to stop her
grandson from choking
her husband.
Officers say they tried to
revive the grandfather, but
were unsuccessful. He was
pronounced dead at the
scene.
Preciado was arrested
at the scene and remained
in jail Tuesday. It wasn’t
immediately known if he
has an attorney.
HOUSTON (AP) — The
Texas Court of Criminal
Appeals has upheld the
death sentence of a Dallas-
area man convicted of
killing his girlfriend and her
daughter during a jealous
rage four years ago.
Attorneys for 42-year-
old Tyrone Cade of Irving
argued that his trial in 2012
was marked by 44 errors,
including problems with
jury instructions, admission
of evidence, improper
testimony and insufficient
evidence to support a death
penalty verdict.
The state’s highest
criminal court Wednesday
rejected each claim.
Cade’s lawyers at his trial
said he was insane when
he fatally stabbed 37-year-
old Mischell Fuller and
her 17-year-old daughter
Desaree Hoskins at their
home. Evidence showed
Cade’s relationship with
Fuller was deteriorating.
Evidence also showed
Cade confessed to the
slayings in a 911 call from
a pay phone in a police
station.
