FORT WORTH (AP)
— The city of Fort Worth
has started breaking up a
homeless camp, using heavy
equipment to clear the area
and force more than 80 adults
and children to abandon most
of their belongings.
Activists on Saturday took
some individuals to assistance
centers or hotels. Others at
the site are expected to move
to alternate hiding places
outdoors near the camp and
a cluster of homeless shelters
“to buy them more time,” said
Beth Bergeron of the homeless
outreach group Ritas Hope.
GARLAND (AP) — Dallas
police say a woman has been
arrested after leaving her
7-year-old daughter to spend
the night alone outside a spa.
Alicia Carroll of Garland
faces a charge of abandoning
and endangering a child.
The 28-year-old remained in
Dallas County Jail Monday
on $25,000 bond. A person
listed as her attorney did not
immediately return a call.
Police say Carroll called
police Sunday morning
saying the person she left her
daughter with on Saturday
night would not return the
child. But police say further
investigation revealed Carroll
left her daughter outside the
King Spa and Sauna.
Officers found the girl
Sunday morning after being
flagged down by citizens who
had seen her near the spa.

Every kindergarten, first,
second, third and fourth
grade student in Mount
Pleasant Independent
School District has received
a book, thanks to a $10,500
award from Reading is
Fundamental.
The award was made
possible through a donation
from Macy’s.
MPISD ordered more than
5,000 books with the funds
so every student at Annie
Sims, E.C Brice, Corprew and
Vivian Fowler Elementary
Schools received a free book
to take home to add to their
home libraries.
Sheila Eddy, the RTI

Elementary School, learned
of the availability of the funds
because of her history as

the Reading is Fundamental

the Early Reading is

on students there. She says
that impact is obvious in the

Twenty years after Selena’s

will remember “The Queen

lookalike contests, dances

her father has mixed feelings
about the celebrations.
“Of course I’m happy that,
today, people remember
Selena more than ever,”
Abraham Quintanilla III said
via phone from his office
in Corpus Christi. “But, as
Jehovah’s Witnesses, we don’t
celebrate deaths or birthdays,
and we don’t want people
to think we’re behind all the
festivities.
“It’s crazy. It grows every
day with events everywhere,
but we’re not organizing
them. Our family never got
together every year on the day
of her murder, because there’s
nothing to celebrate, and this
year won’t be the exception.”

has done a good work for Me.”
