AUSTIN, Texas (AP) —
Texas lawmakers are getting
a taste of the religious
objections issue that sparked
uproar elsewhere — with
some supporters arguing
that church freedoms
must be protected, but
others openly decrying gay
marriage.
Top Republicans in the
state Legislature have made
a last-minute attempt to
revive a bill excusing clergy
from overseeing marriages
that violate their beliefs.
The measure does not go
as far as broader proposals
in Indiana and Arkansas.
Those made national
headlines after opponents
said they would sanction
discrimination against
gay people in the name of
religious freedom.

DALLAS (AP) — The
family of the only person
to die of Ebola in the U.S.
says it is underwhelmed by
a Dallas hospital’s efforts
to fulfill a settlement
agreement to combat the
disease in Africa.
Texas Health
Presbyterian Dallas on
Monday announced it
donated $125,000 toward
a scholarship to train
doctors and nurses in
Liberia. Hospital spokesman
Wendell Watson says the
donation fulfills a settlement
agreement with Thomas
Eric Duncans family that
included an undisclosed
payout.
Duncans nephew,
Josephus Weeks, told the
Associated Press that he
had asked the hospital chain
for $5 million to build a
hospital in Liberia’s capital,
Monrovia.
Christian missionary
group SIM USA says it will
administer the scholarship
and invest it in mutual

Texas has spent more than
$10 million since launching

criticism of testing methods

praised as a leader for the
country.
The bill headed to the
House on Monday for

Lawmakers are also

had reserved a flight to
South Africa for Jan. 15,
2010. He was arrested the
day before the flight.
Prosecutors alleged that
the false statement involved
terrorism, but Murgia’s

DONNA (AP) — Parents
of some students in South
Texas have been told to send
bottled water to school with
their children following a
main break.
Classes resume Tuesday
throughout the Donna
Independent School District
after a ruptured water line
forced more than half of the
schools to close.
Crews continue working
to restore water service
following Monday’s main
break. Superintendent Jesus
Rene Reyna says about 6,000
students had to be sent home.
A statement Tuesday from
the district says parents of
students at inner city schools

will also have bottled water

PORT ARANSAS (AP) —
Corpus Christi’s police chief
has died in a single-vehicle

Port Aransas Police
Chief Scott Burroughs

the roadway in an evasive
action, and he laid down
his motorcycle. Simpson
was wearing a helmet, but
it became dislodged and his

GARLAND (AP) — One
of two gunmen who opened
fire with assault rifles at
a Prophet Muhammad
cartoon contest in Texas
has been identified by a law
enforcement official as a
man who was on the FBI’s
radar four years ago during
a terrorism investigation.
Authorities credited an off-
duty officer working security
at the event with saving lives
by killing the gunmen.
At an apartment complex
in Phoenix where the FBI
says one of the gunmen
lived, federal agents spent
hours Monday examining
a white minivan. They later
began inspecting a second
vehicle, a silver sedan, and
took photographs of papers
taken from the trunk.
FBI agents canvassed the
Autumn Ridge Apartments
complex to speak with
residents as members of the
Phoenix police bomb squad,
wearing protective armor
and helmets, assisted in the
search.
Authorities believe
the apartment belonged
to a man a federal law
enforcement official
identified as Elton Simpson.
The official, who was not
authorized to discuss an
ongoing investigation by
name and spoke to The
Associated Press on the
condition of anonymity, said
investigators were searching
Simpson’s property in
connection with the case.
