FIRST FEDERAL
COMMUNITY BANK, SSB
The only bank you'll ever neat
competitive in the American
Conference but should
finish around the middle of
the pack in the West division
behind newcomer Navy
and defending conference
champion Memphis. Look
for an 8-4 season from UH.
Over in Highland Park
the Southern Methodist
University Mustangs have
a new head coach of their
own. Chad Morris comes to
SMU from Clemson where he
acted as offensive coordinator.
Morris has a strong Texas
pedigree having coached at
five high schools in the state
and winning back-to-back
state titles at Lake Travis.
SMU went 1-11 in 2014 and
while this year should be an
improvement the Mustangs
are still far from contending
for the conference crown.
Road games at UH, Navy and
crosstown rival TCU will all
result in losses. Opening the
season at home against Baylor
on a 7-6 record last season and
compete for the CSUA title.
The Miners open the season
at Arkansas, which barring an
upset will result in a loss. A
road trip to take on Texas Tech
in week two will put UTEP in
a 0-2 hole to start the year.
The good news is after
that the schedule gets
much easier. The Miners
get Louisiana Tech at home
and will be competitive or
favored in every game past
the first two. An 8-4 2015 will
see UTEP improve slightly.
Heading into their fifth
season of play at the FBS
level the University of Texas-
San Antonio Road Runners
will look to be better than
their 4-8 record last season.
Roadrunners head coach
Larry Coker lead the Miami
Hurricanes to a national title
back in 2001 and has made
good progress in building
the UTS A program. The bad

news is they have road trips
to Arizona and Oklahoma
State and a home game
hosting Kansas State.
UTS A is still a few years
of work away from being
competitive for conference
championships. The
Roadrunners will finish 5-7
while showing signs of growth.
After the 2013 season there
was excitement for college
football in Denton. The
North Texas Mean Green
had gone 9-4 and played in
(and won) a bowl game for
the first time since 2004. The
future looked bright for Dan
McCamey’s team.
Then the Mean Green fell
back to Earth in 2014 going
4-8 while not being very
competitive. This year expect
more of the 2014 version
than the 2013 version of
UNT. Road games at Iowa
and Tennessee will be losses.
The rest of CUSA seems
tonight will as well. Anywhere
from 2-10 to 4-8 seems to be
the destiny of SMU in 2015.
Conference USA features
four Texas universities
fighting for the title. Of them
all, Rice seems to be the best
positioned for a run at it.
The Owls went 8-5 last
season and have senior
quarterback Driphus Jackson
and a solid running game to
help lead the offense. Rice
has road games at Texas and
Baylor that will likely result
in losses, though who knows
with the Longhorns lately.
The key game for the
Owls will be the Oct. 30
showdown with Louisiana
Tech at Rice Stadium. The
winner of that one could
take control the CUSA West.
I think Rice gets the win and
takes a 10-2 record into the
CUSA title game.
In far West Texas the
University of Texas-El Paso
Miners are hoping to improve
the ball carriers gaining
the yards on the ground
showed balance. Senior
running back Lamont Byrd
rushed for 87 yards on 14
carries, junior running back
Kameron Levingston gained
71 yards on six carries and
senior quarterback KeMon
Freeman added 82 yards on
16 rushes.
The Tigers will need to
score more points than they
did last week in order to stay
competitive with the Leopards.
For Mount Pleasant to do that
they will need more offensive
production from all positions.
Junior running back
Travion Holloman showed
signs of explosiveness on
the road at Paris last Friday.
Holloman gained over 100
yards on the ground before
being banged up late in the
first half. He will need to be
productive again.
The quarterback play
for the Tigers should be
The college football teams
in the power five conferences
aren’t the only ones with big
dreams this season.
Texas has 12 Football Bowl
Subdivision programs. More
than any other state because,
well, everything is bigger in
Texas. It’s time to take a look at
the remaining college football
teams in the Lone Star State
from outside the power five.
Let’s begin by taking a
look at the Texas teams in
the American Conference.
The University of Houston
has a new head coach
who’s hot off of winning a
national championship. Tom
Herman comes to UH from
Ohio State where he acted
as offensive coordinator
and he will count On junior
quarterback Greg Ward of
Tyler to lead the Cougars.
Houston will be
to have passed them up as
well. I think the Mean Green
actually get worse going 3-9.
The lone Sun Belt
Conference team from Texas
is on the verge of making
their first bowl game since
moving up from the FCS.
Texas State University was
bowl eligible last season and
was left out by the selection
committee for the second year
in a row. The Bobcats hope to
leave no doubt as to whether
or not they should be in a
bowl game this season.
Texas State will drop the
opener on the road at Florida
State but finish 8-4 to get
over that bowl game hump.
There you have it
folks. The season is sure
to be exciting for all the
universities in Texas. No
matter who you cheer for
we can all rest easy now that
college football is back.

The Mount Pleasant Tigers
have a tough road ahead of
them this Friday night.
The Tigers are still fighting
for the first win of the Corey
Homer era. To get it this week
they must overcome one of
the best teams in the region.
Liberty-Eylau is stocked
with experience. The
Leopards returned eight
starters on defense and five
on offense. Last weekend
Liberty-Eylau fell on the
road to defending 4A
Division II State Champions
Gilmer. The Leopards did
keep the game close losing
by a score of 50-45.
Mount Pleasant will have
to focus on slowing down
the Leopards’ balanced
attack on offense. Liberty-
Eylau rushed for 221 yards
last week while gaining
270 through the air. Even
and the two coaches
have said they weren’t
entirely pleased about
the matchup, with both
preferring the Kansas
State-style nonconference
schedule filled with cream
puffs and pushovers.
The Gophers visited Fort
Worth last year, losing 30-7
to a team that wound up
averaging 46.5 points per
game and sharing the Big
12 title.
The Horned Frogs still
missed the four-team playoff
field. They’ve heard nothing
but questions about the
crushing disappointment
for the last nine months,
providing plenty of motivation
to erase that memory with a
national championship run
this season.
Boykin wasn’t particularly
sharp in the opener. He
missed two wide open
receivers down the field for
easy touchdowns, including
Shaun Nixon all alone in
the end zone in the fourth
quarter. He also threw
an interception right to
cornerback Eric Murray in
the second quarter and was
nearly picked by a leaping
De’Vondre Campbell.
He showed just enough
flashes of electricity to walk
out a winner, especially

I thought we had three days
of good practice. The kids
worked hard. Their attitude
has been great. We’re looking
forward to Friday night.”
With a second straight
week facing a high quality
opponent, coach Homer
knows the Tigers have to
be prepared to execute
when he dusted Murray with
a nifty juke to turn a keeper
into a 19-yard touchdown
run in the third quarter that
gave TCU a 17-3 lead.
Rodrick Williams also
fumbled the ball out of
the back of the end zone
about 1 yard away from a
touchdown, and the two
turnovers proved costly in a
one-score game.
The Horned Frogs’
biggest question entering
the season was on defense
after losing six of their top
seven tacklers from last
year’s unit. They also were
missing sack leader James
McFarland and senior
defensive tackle Davion
Pierson, who did not play
for unspecified reasons.
The inexperienced defense
responded by forcing
five punts in the first six
possessions.
The other one ended
when Terrell Lathan sacked
Leidner and forced a fumble
to set up Boykin’s 11-yard
TD pass to Doctson that
gave TCU a 10-0 lead early.
“It just gives us a lot of
confidence in what we can
do,” said defensive end Josh
Carraway, who recovered
Leidner’s fumble. “It just
gives us energy that we can
build on.”
have to play assignment
football and execute in all
three phases of the game.”
Last season Mount Pleasant
lost on the road 43-7 to
Liberty-Eylau. The Tigers will
be hoping for a much different
result tonight. Kickoff is at 7:30
p.m. at Sam Parker Field.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP)
— Longtime friends TCU
coach Gary Patterson and
Minnesota coach Jerry Kill
met at midfield after another
tough game and shook hands.
“He said, ‘We’re never
going to play each other
again,”’ Kill said. “I said,
‘That’s right.”’
The second-ranked Horned
Frogs enter this season with
national championship
aspirations, and the Golden
Gophers showed them just
how difficult that pursuit is
going to be.
Trevone Boykin threw
for 246 yards and a
touchdown and ran for 92
yards and another score
to help the Horned Frogs
outlast Minnesota 23-17 on
Thursday night.
Boykin started his
Heisman push by
completing 26 of 42 passes.
But he also threw an
interception and the Florned
Frogs had a difficult time
getting their frenetic offense
rolling against Minnesota’s
determined defense.
Jaden Oberkrom made
three field goals, including a
53-yarder, and Josh Doctson
had eight catches for 74 yards
and a touchdown for TCU.
Kill was a member of
Patterson’s wedding party,
improved in week two. Junior
Kyle Reynolds took the
majority of the snaps against
Paris, but senior wide receiver
Ladarrius Patterson also saw
some time under center.
With the first week jitters out
of the way combined with
being in front of the home
crowd for the first time this
season expect to see both
quarterbacks look more
comfortable and poised.
Cutting down on last
week’s costly turnovers is
going to be essential for
Mount Pleasant. The Tigers
cannot afford to turn the ball
over against the Leopards’
potent offense.
Coach Homer spoke
about the week of
preparation the Tigers had
leading up to the game.
“I’m proud of the week
we’ve had,” Homer said.
“We changed the practice
schedule up a bit. Did some
things to change our routine.
on offense, defense and
special teams.
“They’re a great team,”
Homer said. “Coach Wells
and his staff have really put
together a good program
over there. They’re very
athletic and have great
schemes. They’re real good
on offense and defense. We
