"The main difference in the new
building over the existing building
will be about 59 years,"Spain said
The new building will also be
equiped with areas for firefighters to
maintain and wash the equipment,
something the old building did not
have. There will also be a larger
meeting room and a recreation room
that can be converted into living

The new building will also be
equipped with floor drains and larger
garage doors. The doors in the old
station were 9--feet wide, the new
doors will be 14 to 16-feet wide. Most
department trucks are about Meet
wide, which can make for some pret-
ty tight fits.
The new station will also be much
more energy efficient, in the old sta-
tion the heaters were having to be
left on throughout the winter months
to keep things from freezing.

stood by Thursday and watched as
city workers demolished their
former fire station.
Last week the Hereford City Com-

The old building was constructed
in 1926 to be used as a creamery and
feed store. The fire department mov-
ed into the building in 1970. at that
tune the building was considered a
temporary home.
Fire Marshal Jay Spain stated that
the building served its purpose well
and that it had seen better days.
"The south wall was severly damag-
ed in 1973 when a milk factory ex-
ploded near the center of town, we
never really got around to fully
repairing the damage," Spain said.
Spain also stated that city
residents had mentioned that the
building looked well kept, and felt the
city should re-consider spending
money on a new facility. Spam stated
that indeed the building did look to be
in good shape, but there were some
problems. “The northeast comer of
the roof was starting to cave in and
any amount of extra weight could
have brought the whole thing down "
