we have a serious sin problem that we can’t

ALMOST EVERYONE has a story to tell
about surviving the three-month spell of
sweltering days, yet all of these stories were
simply replacements for tales about the
winter of 1978-79.
Unique birthday celebrations have made
their way to Allen—just ask Johnnie Capl-
inger. From what we’ve heard, he won’t
anytime soon forget the surprise awaiting
him one afternoon at the office.
In fact, I’ve heard so much about it that
I’m anxious to see the video tapes of his
37th birthday party, but I’m even more
curious to find out what’s being planned for
Johnnie’s 40th year.
Which just goes to prove there’s a lot of
credibility in my favorite Texas tale, “If you
don’t like the weather, just wait awhile—it’ll
change.”

will hear no complaints from me.
I’ve always preferred cooler weather over
the warm months because you can always
put on enough clothing to stay warm, but
you can’t take off enough to stay cool. Even
if you could it wouldn’t be decent.
MY LOVE for cool weather means even
more when it comes time to pay energy costs
for heating or cooling our home, especially
this year because for the first time, our May
electrical bill was lower than in April.
Obviously, we haven’t found it necessary
to run the air conditioner much in the past
month because of the cool weather, the first
time I can remember a situation like that.

Any native Texan, and many transplants
as well, can tell hundreds of stories about
the weather in our fair state—whether it
concerns the bitterest winter or steamiest
summer; prettiest fall or wettest spring.
The summer of 1980 has to be the most
talked about season in recent years because
of the record-setting 100 degree plus days
we suffered through that year.

free, just as Jesus claimed would happen.
But this message can be mere words, a
nice philosophy of life. That’s why Jesus
told His followers to go one step further. He
instructed them to tell what He had done for
them, in them, with them to other people.
If God has done anything worthwhile in
His children, if He does what He claims to
do, then there is good reason to believe that
He can handle our sin problems. And God
does work and live in those who trust Him,
who follow His leadership and loving
guidance in their lives.
That’s our mission as a church. We are to
let people know what Jesus Christ taught
and tell them what He has done to show us
His love and goodness.
How easy it is to do just that when you
have seen God do so much. How I would
love to tell you how God has been so loving,
generous, faithful, patient, forgiving and
protecting toward me. Perhaps I’ll have that
opportunity someday. After all, that is my
mission, and the mission of the Church.
That’s something the church can never
forget, and never will.

super job in supplying and cooking fish for
our recent gathering at Tenlee’s house.
I don’t know of anyone who went home
hungry as our hungry staff and family
members made quick work of the five
gallons or so of fish R.B. caught, cleaned
and cooked for the party.
It goes without saying the party was most
enjoyable, especially the eatin’ and our
thanks to R.B. for making this fete a suc-
