glad to see that merchants generally
are following out the law to a letter.
No one has béen hurt in Sherman by
falling signs/ but other cities have
numerous examples.
The retail trade of Sherman will
always hold its Own, but what about
the wholesale trade t It seems that
it takes something in the way of
transportation facilities to bo)4 ))jat.
Buiid a road to Abilene and another
to Paul's Yalley, and the trade of
these two thriving sections will be
poured into Sherman,
The wholesale merchants of Sher
man are the most deeply interested in
securing additional outlets, and they
should be foremost in the endeavor
to get such roads here, and as the
chanoes are in favor of them having
an opportunity to display their liber-
ality in the near future it is to be
trusted they will toe tbe mark.
Cumpmeeting season bos opened,
and Grayson county promises to be
the scene of a great many interesting
and protracted* series, pnder tbe
supervision of the Methodists. Rev.
R. N. Brown, left today for Cedar,
where he will open a meeting, and
one has been running very success
fully near Yen; Alstyne for some days.
The examination of teapbors has
been in progress all day in tbe
County Judge's offioe, and thus far
everything has been very satisfactorily.
The examination this year is more
rigid than ever before and the Reois-
tbb warns all candidates for certifi
catee that thoy must go to the court
house prepared for a thorough inter
rogatiou.
What has become of the move
promulgated somo timo since relative
to holding a county fair at Sherman
this fall? There is no doubt such an
affuir coúld be mudo a success. It
would certainly be an advertisement
for our city and county tbnt could
not be equalled in any other way.
Let's take hold of the matter and
push it through.
The Sherman base ballists, under
tbe management of C. W. Kimball,
left this morning at 4.35 o'clopk for
Dallas, where they wilf cross bats
with the Dallas boys. Tho club is
greatly strengthened and will put up
an excellent game. They play this
game under tho old "Excelsior"
regime, whioh expire* Monday night,
when the new association takes
place.
A few days sinco a son of Mrs.
Robert Paxton, six or seven years of
age, fell in a well several feet deep,
about fourteen miles south of town.
In an instant his fourteen ypsr old
sister seized tho rope and let herself
down in the well, and caught her
brother and held him and the rope
until a young man, who passed by in
a few minutes, came to their rescue
and thoy were taken froiu their peril
ous condition. A sister, by presence
of mind, saved a brother's life. This
was a noble act and would have been
commendable in one much older than
this young lady
Progress is reported in tho work
of boring artesian wells for the Texas
and Pacifio &t Bonham and Honey
Grove. A depth of 876 feet has been
reachcd in the former and 340 feet in
the latter. Work has been retarded
in the Honfcy Grove well by the hard
fiint rock, through which tfrP f#en
