went that the war would not be long.
The formal education (in classrooms) which Elizabeth obtained in
Europe was administered by private schools in France and by Heathfield
School at Ascot, England. After her schooldays, she lived with her family
at Biarritz, France, where her father served as American vice-consul, and
at their home in Paris, where they lived a few years later. Castle Le Mer,
their home at Biarritz, a city situated 16 miles from the Spanish border,
was purchased from the Baron Rothschild shortly after the outbreak of
World War I.
In France, after America entered World War I, Colonel Park served
as liaison between the U. S. Navy and the French Government in establishing
Bayonne as a Port of Entry for American Army and Navy forces. He received
the Croix de Guerre from the French Government and a citation from the
American Government in recognition of his distinguished service.
In 1926, Elizabeth made her debut in Washington, D.C. The next year,
while visiting in Washington, she came to Beaumont to visit her mother's
close friend, Mrs. Percy Wiess, but remained to be married and lived here
the rest of her life. The homecoming was joyous. Elizabeth and Bascom
Funchess were married on April 10, 1928, in the Percy Wiess home, in the
presence of family members and a host of Beaumont friends, all of whom
looked on the romance as one of Beaumont's special events. The couple
lived to celebrate together fifty-six wedding anniversaries, with happy
memories to recall.
Elizabeth's principal interests were her family and friends, but she par-
ticipated in several organizations despite frail health. She was a member
of St. Mark's Episcopal Church, of the Daughters of the American Revolu-
tion, of the Texas Gulf Historical Society, of the Beaumont Country Club,
and a charter member of the Junior League of Beaumont.
In addition to her husband, H. B. Funchess, Jr., she is survived by a
son, H. B. Funchess, III, of Beaumont and four grandchildren, Jeanette,
Timothy, Richard, and PaulFunchess. Her sister, Suzanne Park Cleveland,
lives in Biarritz, France, and her brother, Sam Park, Jr., predeceased her,
as did her parents.
