Sadly, most, it not all, of those listed as leading genealogists in America
and abroad must have now passed to Elysian fields since their birthdates
were considerably before the turn of the century. However, this volume
offers other information of value to beginning genealogists such as a brief
history of heraldry, a list of American hereditary-patriotic societies, a form
for an individual questionnaire, first steps in genealogy research, etc. In
a geographical register of record searchers, Tyrrell Public Library is listed
as having a genealogical shelf, which "shelf" has now grown, with the aid
and support of the Southeast Texas Historical and Genealogical Society,
to an extensive, recognized genealogical collection.
National Gallery of Art, Makers of History in Washington,
1800-1950 (Washington, D. C.: National Gallery of Art, c. 1950),
174 pp. Indices: subjects, artists.
A catalogue for an exhibition celebrating the sesquicentennial of the
establishment of the federal government in Washington, June 29 - November
19, 1950. 142 portraits, brief biographies divided as "Early Days of the
Republic"; "The War Between the States"; "Reconstruction"; "The Turn
of the Century"; The Two World Wars"; "The Federal City." The last
designation includes Henry Hobson Richardson, a native of Louisiana and
architect noted for the Architectural style known as Richardson Roman-
esque. Beaumont's Tyrrell Historical Library building is related to the style.
No portraits of living persons are shown. The director of the National
Gallery states that this exhibition gives, in microcosm, a preview of what
a National Portrait Gallery should be.[Vol. XXI, No. I
