by the State of Yucatan, twice Secretary of Finance of Mexico, twice governor

Masons in Mexico, author of advanced social legislation and architect of
a stable Mexican economy and budget balancer, proponent of an income

liberal political ideals - these were Lorenzo de Zavala.
Fluent in several languages, urbane traveler, polished frequenter of Euro-
pean courts and friend of world leaders, he was, moreover, an empresario
of settlement in Southeast Texas, a philosopher of the Texas Revolution,
a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence, an author of the Texas
Constitution of 1836, first Vice-president of the Republic of Texas, designer
of the Texas flag, a close friend of Santa Anna and of Stephen F. Austin,
a husband and father who sacrificed his life at the age of 48 to save his
