LORETTA BROUSSARD CASEY
(1896-1984)
Mrs. Loretta Broussard Casey, widow of the late Walter M. Casey, a
leader in public affairs of the Beaumont community, died at the age of 88
years on December 22, 1984, in her Beaumont home, 2301 Long Avenue.
During her long and fruitful life, she and her husband had traveled exten-
sively but had always returned to Beaumont to join the large family circle
of Broussards, who were an example to the community of happy family
life, religious faith, and constructive deeds of a civic nature.
Born in Beaumont on August 4, 1896, Loretta Broussard was a descen-
dant of a pioneer Jefferson County family. She was one of the nine children
of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Eloi Broussard, who brought up their family in
the spacious residence at 1614 College Street. Mr. Broussard was widely
recognized for the distinctive contributions he made to the rice industry,
particularly in irrigation, milling, and marketing.
Following her early education in local parochial schools, Loretta at-
tended and became a graduate of St. Mary's College, Notre Dame, Indiana.
Then she pursued additional studies in the decorative arts at the University
of California and in Spain.
Immediately following their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Casey lived in
Tampico, Mexico, but returned to Beaumont, where they shared the large
family home on College Street until the death of Loretta's parents.
Although she had no children, Mrs. Casey took a close and vital in-
terest in the lives of her numerous nieces and nephews. She was also generous
in contributing to church and community projects. Among her special
benefactions were the Catholic Diocese of Beaumont, St. Anthony's
Cathedral, St. Elizabeth Hospital, and Kelly High School.
She was preceded in death by her husband but is survived by a sister,
Sister Rita Estelle of the Holy Cross Sisters, Kensington, Maryland, and
by a brother, J. E. Broussard, Jr., of Beaumont.
The Mass of Resurrection was said in St. Anthony's Cathedral in celebra-
tion of her life, and entombment was in the Forest Lawn Mausoleum.Nov. 1985]
