For many years the stage was a bar

deed, decorations given to actors—
to MM. Mounet-Sully and Couquel-

now conferred upon them supposed-

at the Conservatoire, not on account
of their dramatic careers. Only

uses of solidified air, continents in
the following «¡train on a certain
possible inconvenience of introduc-
ing it into dwelling houses: There
is, however, one danger in connec-
tion wjth solidified air to wjhich the
attention of the public has not yet
been called. It is well known that
all sorts of microbe* that are found
in water are preserved unharmed
in ice, and that when the ice melts
they are set free to do their deadly
work. Now sound is contained in
air, and may it not. very w^U hap-
pen that when the air is solidified
whatever sounds may be contained
in it may be preserved to be set free
at some extremely inconvenient
time ? Thus solidified Swiss air
may be full of yodelling, and a
brick of it placed in a bedroom at
night may suddenly give forth the
unholy sounds in the middle of the
night. Or air from Italy may eon-
tain compressed hand-organ music,
or the unprintable remarks of tour
ists who have received their hotel
billa with extra charges for "View
of Vesuvius'' or "Association with
the memory of Milor Byron."

the SanbOrn-Ferris Map company
of New York, which furnishes maps
and data upon which fire insurance
companies, base their rates in vari-
ous communities, was at El Paso
a few days ago. He has just com
pleted his investigations and pre-
pared his report, To n correspond-
ent he said:
''In May, 1898, two years ago,
one of. our Chicago men came out
here to revise the map of El Paso,
and now I find that iu the last two
years 834 new buildings have been
erected within the fire limits of
this city. This makes a record
without parallel among western or
southern cities, In short, El Paso's
growth within two years has been
500 per cent greater than the
growth, of any Other place in the
West or south in the last' five
vears.

Tugboat's Long Oeoaa Trip. .
-Bound for San Francisco on a
perilous journey around the Horn,
the New York harbor tug L. Luck
enbacli has just started on her long
voyage today. The tug, one of the
fastest and stanchest in this port,
is scheduled , to make the passage iu
forty-five days, record time for
tugboat. Captain McKay, who is
to be her commander in San Fran
cisco, will pilot the Luckenbaeji on
her ocean trip. He is an expect
navigator. Much difficulty was ex
perieuced in finding the fifteen men
who make up the crew, as the dan
gers that the little vessel will en-
counter will be enormous, even for
an oceangoing tug. Only three or
four tugboats have made the trip
around the Horn, the best record,
of sixty-three days, having been
made by the O. NY. Pride, which
successfully navigated the South
em seas eight years ago.

of a black gown, over which waa
draped several yards of red cheese-

which he said i "We will sacrifice

by Moses and according to the Bi-

Bible says there must b« nothing
left the second day, and we Will eat
the lamb to-night, in yonder dining
room. There ain't much to a lamb,
but the meat is very sweet. Those
who want to eat of the sacrifice can
join us. It will cost you only 15
cents. Blessed be the Lord." Then
a butcher dispatched the lamb, and
two black pigeons were dipped in
the blood. ' '
