The Baylor Bears are hotfooting it
toward the 1923 conference baseball
championship. Yesterday's 6-4 win
from the S. M. U. Mustangs helped the
Bruins tremendously. Last season,
the championship was decided in the
final series between the Bears and
the Longhorns. It begins to appear
as if this year will witness a repeti-
tion of that fight. The Longhorns
won last year, primarily, through the
great pitching of Ponsford, who when
working under Billy Disch always
pitched phenomenal ball. This year,
the Longhorns have no pitcher of
Ponsford’s class—there’s the rub.

TEXAS ASSOCIATION
NEW YORK, May 4.—After losing
After Sunday, the Lake Austin In-
dependents will play at Ranger Park
when the local Texas Association team
is out of town, it was announced Fri- "
day morning by Business Manager
James A. Warren of the Lakemen. No
games will be played here by the Lake-
men when the Rangers have home
games, he stated. The Lakemen will
go on road trps when the Rangers
come here for a home stay.
Sunday will be the Lakemen’s last
appearance on the Lake Austin Park
diamond before the transfer to Ranger
Park. On that day they will play the
Kelly Field Fiyers, who will come over
to Austin in airplanes for the game.
Before the game, Manager Warren will
fly over the city and drop a number
of passes to Sunday's game as well
as a season pass to all local games
of the Lakemen.
Mr. Warren announced also Friday
that President C. H. Brownlee of the
Austin Texas Association club had au-
thorized the statement that Manager
Rankin Johnson would lend some of'
his players to the Lakemen for games '
here while his team is on the road '
This will strengthen the Lake Austin
nine considerably.
McCullough is slated to pitch sun- .
day's game at Lake Austin Park
against the Kelly Flyers. The visit of
the latter here Sunday will be their
first this season, but not the first in
recent seasons, for both last season
and the season before they appeared
here against the fast American Legion
nine. The aviators’ lineup has not ,
been received.
contests staged here under the direc-
tion cf the Interscholastic League.
More boys and girls are fired with
the desire to attend the University
through the agency of the Interscho-
lastic J esgue than by any other one
oranizaton—every Austin citizen
should support the league to the limit.
Batteries: Dickerman and Taylor;
The locals have their first game to win
on the road, and they are certainly
due to come through . this afternoon.
Bob Crow, the lad who was pounded
so severely yesterday by the Gushers
is a fighter. Day before yesterday,
he was charged with the loss of the
first game of the series to the Mexia
nine. But yesterday he wanted to go
back again. Before the Rangers left
on their road trip, the writer predicted
the locals would win six out of the
nine games, played. We still believe
the Rangers will win a majority of
their games away from home on this
trip; but we are certainly hoping they
start that winning this afternoon.

gathered today on Clark Field. Those

the event is a big event in their lives.
The records that will be made today
and tomorrow will compare favorably
with records made by interscholastic
athletes in any state of the union.
As a matter of fact, it would be a
rather safe bet to wager that a team
could be picked from all the assembled
athletes that would defeat any gang
of interscholastic athletes from any
other state in the country. One can-

Preliminary events in track and in
tennis held this morning in the In-
terscholastic League championship
competition brought forth sterling
performances. Austin High School
has a fighting chance to repeat her
victory in the track and field cham-
pionship in Class A, won last year
largely through the efforts of Mac
Keeble, star hurdler. This year, a
hurdler again is placing the red and
white in the running. Ledlow, star
of the local speedsters, qualified for
the finals in both the 120-yard high
and the 220-yard low hurdles. The
Austin lad ran without seeming exer-
tion, and was well within his best
speed. He is the favorite to win first
in at least one of the "timber-top-
ping” events tomorrow. Captain Phil
Walker, of Austin, qualified for the
semi-finals in the 220-yard dash.
Maufrais, the best weight man of the
locals, qualified for the semi-finals in
the shot put. If Ledlow is able to
finish first in the finals of both hurdle
races, Austin High will have a great
chance of repeating her victory of
last year. Electra High School and
Main Avenue High, of San Antonio,
are among the most formidable con-
tenders for the Class A championship.
The stars of the Electra team are the
Thomas brothers.
In the Class B competition, Cock-
rell, of Alvin, was the star athlete of
the morning. Last year this crack
won the state championship in Class
B single-handed, and he is almost
certain to repeat his great perform-
ance tomorrow. This morning he won
his way to the finals in the 50-yard
dash, the 100-yard dash, the 220-yara
dash, and in the broad jump. He rOns
.all the dashes in close to record
breaking time and broad jumps over
22 feet.
In the boys’ tennis competition, only
singles matches were played this
morning. The feature match of the
morning was the struggle between
Berkeley Bell, Austin youngster, and
Tom Armstrong, of Waco. Armstrong
won, 8-6; 1-6; 8-6, in a desperately
fought contest. His defeat of Bell re-
moves one of his most dangerous
rivals for the state championship from
Armstrong's path.

There are many crack tennis play-
ers among the girl competitors, and
the fight which each lass puts into
her play is good to look upon. It
is rather amusing to watch the Uni-
versity boys at these tennis matches.
Always, they pick as their favorite
one of the good looking girls, and
spend hours trying to cheer her on to
victory. Of course, all girls are good
looking, more or less, but it is the
little girls with sun-browned com-
plexions who are worrying more about
whether their shots are going in, than
they are about their complexions who
usually win.

The Longhorns fell on Carlisle Hit-
tejohn, star hurler of tha Austin Col-
lege Kangaroofl, for eight runs in the
eight inning, and won 14-6 victory
afternoon from the Austin Colle, e
nine. Disch’s crew was leading 6-5
when the Varsity players came to bat
in the eight stanza, and the onslaught
ruined what had been a fairly inter-
esting ball game.

game for the Longhorns, but was

Hyde Park yesterday won a game
from the strong Fast Austin team,
featured by timely hits on the part
of the North Austin boys. Pitcher
Howse of the Hyde Park team pitched
shut-out ball for the major portion of
the game, but several errors on the
part of his teammates accounted for
some of Fast Austin's runs. The East
Austinites led until the eighth inning,
when Williams of Hyde Park slammed
out a threebagger and was brought in
bv Haile, who parked one over the
fence for four bases. Fast Austin
failed to score again, while Hyde Park
brought in two more, the final count
being 6 to 6. Burnett and Williams
starred with their stickwork.

Ierkeley Bill, 15 years of age, an
Austin lari, is one of the favorites to
win the iutersc holastic singles cham-
pionship of the state. Berkeley is as
yet still in the Austin Junior High
School, but he plays better tennis than
most of the boys, twice his age. Yes-
terday, the Austin doubles team was
defeated by Oak Cliff High School of
Dallas. Berkeley was not entered in
the doubles. Young Bell hits the ball
hard, has a nice service, volleys well,
and uses his head. A win for the
Austin youngster would be an out-
standing achievement, for he will have
plenty of competition.

The Wichita Falls team of Haines
and Powers is about due to come
across this year with a win in the
tennis doubles. This year is the third
year the same team has competed in
the state meet at Austin. In the
other two years they went to the finals
each time, only to be defeated in the
last round. Despite the experience
gained from their other two years of
conpetition, the Wichita youngsters
