Everything seemed to be going
along nicely and Uncle Wiggily was
almost at the pen house of Alice the

duck pond ocean walking slowly so
as not to fall the bunny rabbit gen-

"Ahem! One moment if you

"Hal I -vonder if that is Grand-

Uncle Wiggily. but when he turned
he saw that it was a big brown bear
who was shuffling along over the ice.
"Oh!" said Uncle Wiggily.
"Oh!" growled the bear. "It's
about time you stopped! I want you
to come to my den with me!"
Uncle WigBlly didn't need to ask
what for. All too well he knew what
the bear wanted and the poor bunny
rabbit gentleman wished there was
some way of getting home safe.
He put his paws down in his
pocket and felt of the new pair of
skates In one and the old dull slip-
pery pair in the other. Hardly
thinking what he was doing Uncle
Wiggily pulled out the pair of old
skates.
"What have you there?" asked th&
bear not any too politely.
"Skates." said Uncle Wiggily. not
saying what kind. ' Would you like
to try a pair? I have two and I no-
ticed that you couldn't walk very
well on the slippery ice."
"No more I could." aaid the bear.
In a grillery-growlery voice. "1
thought I'd never catch you to carry
you of? to my den. Well I will try
a pair ot skates since you ask me.
But don't think I'm going to let you
go for them. Hand 'em over!"
So Uncle Wiggily gave the bear
Alice's old dull slippery skates and
the bear sat down on tbe ice to put
them on his paws. All tbe while he
kept watch of Uncle Wiggily so the
bunny didn't dare run away.
"Now we'll see what happens" said
the bear when he bad fastened the
skates on and tried to stand up. I'll
just skate away with you to my den
and then "
But I guess you know what hap
pened without me telling you. All of
a sudden one of the bear's paws with
a dull skate on it slipped out from
under him.

THIS Is read as an uncertain day.
Mars Saturn and Mercury are!
all adverse while the sun and
Jociter are in benefic aspect
The signs seem to Indicate gain and
benefit to commercial interests
through the war and this should be a
lucky day for all who seek contracts
or big business.
It is a day auspicious tor obtaining
employment or soliciting Influence
that will assure position or prefer-
ment Mercury however. Is In a place that
seems to presage much sensational
writing that exposes graft and prof-
iteering. This Influence will be espe-
cially powerful tbe latter part of next
month.
The sway Is not an encouraging one
for authors but nevertheless there Is
a prophecy that great books will be
produced In this new year.
During this configuration It Is well
to seek appointments and to obtain
recommendations as the sun augurs
well for all efforts toward personal
advancement
Mars appears to give warning of
hard days for American soldiers who
are to have no medium experiences In
the war for theirs will b5 great losses
and great victories.
The old should take extreme care of
themselves as the planetary Influences
are said to be subtly dangerous to
then? inasmuch as depression and
sadness are produced and tbe hold on
life is loosened.
There is a sign Indicating new race
problems and now in this year of
llfj will be afforded an opportunity
to put In practice the universal broth-
erhood Ideals or serious consequences
will result
Persons whose blrthdate it is have
the outlook for a busy year. Those
who are employed probably will be
promoted.
Children born on this dav will be
impetuous and yet lovable. These sub-
jects of Capricorn are often very ar-
gumentative. CoDVricht 1318. bv the

Tonic Baths.
A
XT sort of bath is a tonic pro
vided you do not catch a cold
from exposure right after It
for bathing cleanses the pores of the
skin letting them do their work of
throwing off waste from the body (
and it stimulates the circulation re-
laxes the muscles and a lot of other
things which you know as well as I
and which I'll omit for brevity
But some baths are more benefit lal
than others and more luxurious. The
kind I'm coing to talk about cost
very little e- cry woman can have
their laxurv. if She has to bathe
In a wash basin.
There's the salt bath whirh stimu- '
lates tired muscles and soothes Jan-'
gled nerves. It consists of throw- i
ing several handsful of common sea
salt ten cents a. hair intn a tihr.i
of hot water and relaxing n this for
a few minutes. Then bathe quiekly
and by rubbing the skin briskl with
rough towel.
There's the camphorated bath a
tonic bath for whicU you drop Into
the water enough of the following to
make it slightly milky
Tincture of camphor two ounces
Cologne three ounces.
Tincture of benxoin. one ounce. '
These are simple lotions found In
every bathroom.
There's the VIshy bath which you 1
can have at home for practicallv no i
expense with the same tonic results i
that many people travel to MConti-1
nental Baths" to get It consists of
dissolving a couple of pounds of bl-;
carbonate of soda Just plain baking
ouuh in .a smaii iudiui 01 wt-ter. Bak-
ing soda Is very cheap when bought
by the pound and this bath Is won-
derfully good In hot weather or when
tho skin has broken out with prickly
heat or rash.
Epsom salts baths In hot water are
saldto be rood for reducing. Epsom
salts Is often dissolved in pure soap
Jelly and rubbed on fleshy parts of
the body to reduce them as It is
supp-sed to dissolve the fatty parti-
cles beneath the skin. I have heard
women who have tried this say it la
very effective. For the bath two
pounds of Epsom salts to a small tub
of hot water Is about enough. You
must stay In tho water for ten or
15 minutes or until the hot water has
cooled. Of course the perspiration
Induced by a very hot prolonged
steaming would reduce in Itself1.
Whatever their effect upon fat. the
salts are wonderfully good for rheumatics.
