Q.—I’ve never understood why a
bad dream is spoken of as a “night-
mare.” What is so frightening
about a female horse after dark?
A.—The “mare” of nightmare is
not a female horse, although the
idea is so firmly rooted that many
persons say, “I was riding a night-
mare,” probably because of a faulty
interpretation of Shakespeare’s, “I
will ride thee o’ nights like the
mare.”
The mare of nightmare and of
Shakespeare is not a female horse.
It is a demon called “incubus” who
was supposed to crouch upon the
chest of sleepers and produce fright-
ful dreams. The incubus is the same
naughty fiend whose other name ap-
pears in the expression “a mare’s-
nest.”
Mare (the demon) comes from the
Anglo-Saxon word mara, “Demon.”
Mare (the horse) comes from the
Anglo-Saxon word mearh, “horse.”
Hence, the two words have no con-
nection whatever; the identical
spelling is the result of some an-
cient scholar’s error.
