Chicago, Ill. Strikes by employers
against the government and consum-

any stoppages by labor, but they have
been largely ignored in the press.
That significant point was made by
President Felix H. Knight of the Car-

Austin, Texas, March 29.— Undulant
(Malta) fever is a disease which is
transmitted to human beings by in-
fected animals. Individuals may ac-
quire the disease (1) as the result of
direct contact with infected animals
or (2) following the use of raw dairy
products, obtained from infected dairy
cows. If the disease is due to contact
with infected animals or their waste
products, the germ gains entrance to
the human body through the skin, Dr.
Cox, state health officer, stated.
Persons who live on farms are more
subject to undulant fever than those
who live in cities. On farms, the dis-
ease is more apt to affect men due
to the fact that men come in contact
with hogs and cows to a much greater
extent than do farm women. Farmers
have direct contact with animals dur-
ing loading and unloading for market.
The handling of infected cows or sows
and of the young at time of birth
represent hazardous types of contact.
The danger of undulant fever may be
reduced greatly by avoiding as much
as possible all forms of direct con-
tact with animals which may be in-
fected. The wearing of heavy gloves if
contact is unavoidable should aid in
protecting the skin against exposure.
Urban residents have little or no oc-
casion to come in direct contact with
infected animals. Undulant fever ac-
quired in city or town is • due, as a
rule, to the use of milk, cream, and
butter which lack certain safeguards.
Prevention of undulant fever, wheth-
er due to contact with infected ani-
