DEPREDATIONS BY BANDITS.
Gang of Fifteen Pillage and Kill
In Small towns of New Mexico.
El Paso Tex. Feb. 9. Jim
Wilt recently appointed marshal
of Santa Rosa N. AI. and one of
the most fearless officers in this
section arrived iu El Paso today.
He gives accounts of iutny depre-
dations committed by a band of
outlaws which he says numbers
fifteen. Several small towns in
the vicinity of Santa Rosa have
beeu pillaged and stores and post-
oflicesJooted. Fonr Americans and one Mex-
ican have been killed by the gang.
The last fight occurred at Fort
Summer where El Paso's collector
of customs Pat Garrett made
himself famous by the killing
of "Billy the Kid."
Several posses are after the
bandits but the Utter have good
horses and are well supplied with
firearms and their capture in the
wild and sparcely settled country
is not thought likely.

Marconi's Achievement.
Those who started in to belittle
Marconi's experiments have really
had the opposite effect from what
they intended their opposition and
criticism says the Philadelphia
Times have persuaded the general
public that the Marconi system so
far as transoceanic signals go is in
a very much more advauced aud
practical state than it really is. As
a matter of fact the exchange of
signals was a triumph of its kind
but it by no means indicates that
the whole problem of dependable
unfailing communication over great
distances without wires has been
solved. It has not. Everything
however goes to show that the
various experts iu and out of gov-
ernment service who are working
on the wirelejss transmission pro-
blem are very near a practical solu
tion. Marconi is but one of many
experimenters bdt so far 03 his
audacity and ingenuity and his
knack of doing the right thing at
the right time has led them all
particularly in the very pictur-
esque issue of focusing on himself
public attention of some dramatic
feat.
