Brownsville Extension
Of Sap Railroad.
Work is Progressing With Great
Activity Sap a Great
Developer.
Houston Post:
President Hudson the newly
elected chief executive of the Sau
Antonio and Aransas Pass has
great faith in the ultimate future of
that road and especially in the ex-
tension from Alice Brownsville to
which is now building. While the
San Antonio and Aransas Pass has
never been what might be called a
No. 1 paying proposition that it
will yet traverse a territory which
will not be surpassed in productive-
ness and fertility by any other
section of the Slate an not be
doubted.
President Hudson is an exponent
of a progressive policy and like all
successful promoters a player of
the game of development. He
eealizes and appreciates theinsepar-
ableness of railroads and the peo-
ple. That class of development
agricultural industrial and com-
mercial is anticipated when a rail-
road extends its line through a
fertile and resourceful territory
and this is a foundation stone in
Mr. Hudson's method of procedure.
It is in accordance with this
progressive policy that the new
line to Brownsville is now being
constructed. The territory through
which the new line as projected is
one vast stretch of fertile rich soil
which in its present environment is

jiing purposes. The climatic con-
Iditions are reported to be excellent
land the rainfall well adapted and
Tiregulated so to speak to meet the
ineeds of agricultural pursuits.
In discussieig the oew line which
ais now being constructed from Alice
to Brownsville with a representative
of the Post yesterday .morning Mr.
Hudson saidrWorkon the Browns-
ville extension is progressing with
great and satisfactory activity.
Every team and teamster available
have been pressed into service and
we are still looking for men and
teams.
The work of grading and track
laying will be pushed with all pos-
sible speed and dispatch. As an-
nounced some time aga it is the
avowed intention to have the line
constructed complete into Browns-
ville .from Alice within two years.
It is safe to say that the road will
Le completed and in operation
within the stipulated time.
"Naturally we realieze that the
new line into Brownsville will not
be on a paj-ing basis for some -.time
possibly several years after it has
been completed and put in opera
tion. Notwithstanding this fact
we are willing to trust in the future.
The Brownsville extension will
traverse a section which is noted to
those who have inspected it for its
fertility and the possibilities which
it present. By a natural and logical
process of development the territory
tributary to the line will open np
and present produce for shipment.
Then the railroad will begin to
show earnings."
Mr. Hudson has succeeded in
perfecting an arragement with the
holders of . large tracts of land
tributary to the Brownsville exten-
sion which assures the development
of that section in an agricj'uir.i'
waj. On this point' Mr. Hudson
spoke as follows: "The greatest
trouble which a railroad experiences
in entering a new territory is the
speculator. It is generally the case
in such instances that the holders
of large tracts of land refuse to part
with an- of their property short of
extravagant prices. Speculators
often make their appearance bu'
up available lands and await the
development of the section which
always raises land values.
"This condition has been eliminat-
ed in reference to the land along the
line of the Brownsville line by an
agreement which has been reached
between the railroad and the large
land holders. These men have
generously agreed to either cut
up their holdings in small sections
or turn them over to parties who
will do it for them. This arrange-
ment means that homeseekers
farmers and others are now able to
secure tracts of land at reasonable
values. It also means that the
development of that section of the
State is not to be retarded but left
free to take a logical and natural
course of development. It can also
be seen that the time when the rail-
road will assume a paying basis
will not be far distant."
Work On Alice Road.
Alice Echo.
Fifty miles of the survey now be-
ing made for the San Antonio &
Aransas Pass extension southward
has been approved accepted and
turned over to contractor J. P. Nel-
son who has already quitea stretch
of road ready for the ties. A force
of thirty men are clearing right of
way and have already finished two
miles having reached Joaquin Mil-
ler's pasture and have finished a
long stretch in Capt. J. F. Scott's
pasture.
A force of graders consisting of
scrapers and plow teams are at work
at various points for five miles out
on the line.
One of the sub-contractors is Mrs.
Hooker a widow lady whose outfit
consists of four teams and a lot of
laborers superintended by Mr. Rice
Mr. reison uie contractor in
formed the Echo that he will soon
greatly increase the number of grad
ing outfits and that the work will
go on as fast as possible.
W. A. Hinnant who has charge
of a gang of twelve men says he
has already unloaded 70000 ties
and thirty cars of bridge timber.
The line of the Sap's extension from
where it crosses the Tex-Mex. rail-
road at the depot is a busy scene
for several miles.
Contractor J. P. Nelson has had
many years of experience in rail-
road building and hence there will
be no expensive mistakes and un-
necessary delays.
The slogan of the whole push
now is: On to the Bio Grande.
A GOOD EXAMPLE.
The repeated warnings of the
State health authorities and prox-
imity of yellow fever to our border
is giving the war on the mosquito
an impetus that bodes weft for the
public health. Brownsville has or
dered ten barrels of crudepetroleam
to be used in pools of stagnant wa-
ter and other towns ought to follow
the example. Pouring oil on the
waters is a good thing most any
way yo;i take it Karnea County
