the crown of England by the time
when Shakespeare wrote of him.
Thus, and even now clearly when
we consider the relation of these two
plays to their sources. it seems prob-
able that, although the earlier is called
a history and the latter a tragedy, the
author of them must have thought
them almost identical in purpose. If
so, the contrast between them is really
an example of his growth between the
time when his work began and that
when his power had reached its height.
From craftsmanship he grew to art.
and through art to nature
Prof. Wendell concluded by some
general remarks to tye effect that the
growth thus incident in Shakespeare's
work has never ceased. In his own
time hardly more than a successful
London playwright, Shakespeare has
grown, at the nd of three centuries,
to be the greatest poet of the modern
world. And this growth proves to be
only the deathlees pers’stence of his
normal growth as was evident in the
two plays on which most of the ad-
dress dwelt. The contras between

LONDON, April 35— It is announced
offictally that HIr Roger asoment wm
brought to London Sunday for trial.
The announcement follows:
"Sir Robert Casement, who was ar-
rented In connection with an abortive
attempt to larl arms in Ireland from
a German vessel, was brought to Lon-
don Sunday morning, and is now de-
tained in military euetody. It is un-
derstood evident e of proceedings in
Germany since the outbreak of the
war will be produced at his trial."
Owing probably to the British cen-
sorship, only the bare facts In con-
nection with ths arrest of Sir Roger
Casement and the present situation in
Ireland have been made public.
It was announced officially last night
that an attempt Was made last week
to land arms and ammunition In Ire-
land from a German auxillary, under
the guise of a neutral merchant ship
in conjunction with a German subma-
rine The auxiliary was sunk and a
number of prisoners, including Sir
Roger, were captured.
In another London dispatch it was
indicated that unsettled conditions pre-
va!l in certain parts of Ireland. An
unsuccessful attempt was made Bun-
day to wreck a train near Marybor-
ough, southwest of Dublin.
Kir Roger, who was leader of the
separqtist faction in Ireland, went to
Berlin after the outbreak of the war
with the intention, It was said, to open
negotiations between the German gov-
ernment and the anti-English prty in

After dwelling on these matters. Prof
Wendell proceeded to contrast with
them the general aspect of a play late
in Shakespeare’s career—Macbeth,
probably written about 1506. In this,
he pointed out, the general nature of
the incidents and the general devel-
opment of the characters is so nearly
like what might have occurred inact-
ual life, in spite of the beautiful poetry
in which the story is set forth, one is
apt to think of it much as one would
think of something which has really

sure he will listen with attention to
every word of the sketch, for it is
powerful.
The story is, briefly, that the men
have been called to the colors and thal
the government is urging them to be
married before they aie called to the
front. In the excitement of War they
are choosing mates quite Indiscrimi-
nately, manuy young girls marrying
men with whom they are scarcely ac-
quainted, and all of them entering into
the spirit of the thing as though it
were a great lark. One woman in the
village, who Is a newly-wed, has al-
ready seen her husband go to the
front, she was married before the
"war bride" rush began marriages by
the wholesale. She is sickened at the
thought of such matches and de-
nounces them with such effect that
there is a notable falling-of within a
few days. A cahrge of treason is pre-
' aen ted just about the time news comes
from the front that her husband and
ths four sons of the elderly woman who
represents the old regime have been
killed. Ths young wife, who is shortly
to bs a mother, rebels at the thought
that the women are mere "breeding
machines to provide victims for fu-
ture wars” and writes a message to
ths king, in which she demands that
he promise there shall be no more war,
otherwise, she will not bear her child
She urges other women to do the same
As she is about to be summoned be-
fore a militar 3 court she hands her
message to the waiting officer, steps
off stage and a shot is heard. The
officer dismisses the matter with a
shrug and thu promise to the elderly
woman that he "will hush it up" for
her sake. He comforts her with the
assertion that the youngo rwoman was
mad.
The leading role calls for emotional
acting of a high quality and the part
I was ably presented. To those whose
minds are inclined toward ths view
point of the young wife, the play is
tremendous To those who are not so
inclined, the part of the old mother
is just as appealing, for she is the
material out of which great Nations
have been builded. Mourning the loss
of four sons, she yet has the Spartan
strength to dry her tears and bid adieu
to a mere boy who is called to the
colors and. kissing him, says: "Fight
well, my son."
As one would expect in a bill with a
gripping tragedy as the headliner, the
rest of the features are the merriest
possible and the comedy this week is
just a little more uproarious than is
usual Flanagan and Edwards present
one of the best comedy sketehes of re-
cent years in vaudeville, called "Off
and Ob.” The lines are a scream and
as a contrast to the usual vaudeville
sketch of this sort the thing hangs

the photoplay.
In tho first place, Henry Otto, who
directed "Undine” for Bluebird fea-
tures, picked out the nice warm waters

of "Undine."
And the fairy tale, originolly meant
