Harold Throckmorton, last season’s intercollegiate tennis champion,
has upset lots of dope in eastern circles and by beating T. R. Pell. Hall,
Murray and other leading players has won a high ranking. Throckmorton
is perhaps the first easterner to adopt successfully the California style of
play and though scarcely more than a boy has amazed his opponents with
his smashing play, -----

CHICAGO, July 1.—Absence of sell-
ing pressure resulted today in a de-
cided upturn in quotations on wheat.
Bulls were encouraged by Liverpool
advices that the European demand for
the new American crop had improved.
Opening prices, which ranged from %c
off tollc up with July at >1.01 to
$1.01% and September Lt >1X4% to
$1.04%, were followed by a material
advance all around. *
Corn rs owing.to a lack of deliv-
eries and to the lightness of offerings.
After opening at %e decline to he
advance, the market scored moderate
general gains.
Sympathy with the strensth of other
grain hardened oats.
Higher prices on hogs gave firm-
ness to prices. x,
Later wheat tended to recede be-
cause of the ail ed offensive, but even-
ing up of trades for adjournment un-
til Wednesday caused a rally. The
clone was unsettled, %c to 1% net
higehr with July at $1,031 and Sep-
tember at >1.05% to $1.05%. In later
transactions active call from the sea-
board was somewhat offset by the ex-
cellent weather conditions. The close
was nervous at %c to %c net gain.

sets forih two grounds, that one of
the jurors was convicted of a felony
and that the the state in its direct
testimony' did not lay a basis for an
attack on the defendant’s character
that was later developed. The hearing

NEW YORK, July 1.—With the Gov-
ernment reports on acreage and con-
dition due at 11 o’clock trading was
very quiet in the cotton market dur-
ing today’s earlier session. Owing to
the holiday there were no cables from
Iiverpool and the action of the market
suggested that scattering accounts had
been pretty well evened up for over
the report and week end. The opening
was steady at an advance of 2 to 3
points on a little buying by houses
with IAverpool connections with Octo-
ber selling around 13.27c and Decem-
ber 13.43c during the early trading, or
about 5 to 7 points not higher.
A very severe break followed fhe
publication of the Government’s crop
report later in the morning with Octo-
ber contracts selling off to 12.81c and
December to 13.02c, or about 25 points
under last night's closing figures, as a
result of general heavy offerings. Clos-
ing prices showed rallies of 6 or 7
points from the lowest on covering
with the final tone barely steady at a
net decline of 26 to 29 points. Closed,
barely steady.

NEW YORK, July 1.—Declines ex-
tending in few instances lo more than
a substantial fraction marked the
opening of.the week-end session, the
market remaining under the influence
of the Mexican situation. Dealings
were on a limited scale due mainly to
the small attendance of traders. Texas
Company and Canadian Pacific were
distinctly firm. Later specialties be-
gan to sag with especial heaviness in
Baldwin Locomotive, Crucible Bteel,
Btudebaker, Industrial Alcohol, Mexi-
can petroleum and American Smelting:
United States Steel y.elded a small
fraction with 1 for Bethlehem.
Pressure was directed against vari-
ous specialties, notably Industrial Al-
cohol. which registered an extreme de-
cline of 4% points. Mexicans and Mo-
tors yielded 2 to 5 points at the lowest
and Marines, as well as metal issues
shaded a point or more. Rails alone
were firm, respondin- to further bril-
liant statements or earnings by Penn-
sylvania and New York Central. Can-
adian Pacific rose almost 2 points with
substantial advances in Wabash pre-
ferred issues. The closing was heavy.
Bonds were lower.
