With the coming of higher in-
terest rates comes a great deal of
interest in the various ways to
finance the purchase of real estate.
Rates of interest that are advertis-
ed may not apply in all cases. In-
terest rates vary depending on a
number of factors, such as the size
of the loan in proportion to the
value of the property.
If the loan is small compared to
value, the lender has more securi-

ARON CLOUSE displays a beastly reward.
I had been really depressed after missing the cinnamon col-
ored black bear, but the sign around this new hit was a quick
cure for it.
Chris Christianson, my guide, had a map on how to find the
bait. We had a little trouble finding where Fred Ellis, the owner
of Rawhide Adventures, had set it. Things never look the same
to different people. But we found it and there were three piles of
what bears do in the woods around it.
Chris tied a bait sack full of our bread, honey and powdered
milk bait in the tree over the bait. This stand was a ground
stand. You had to lay on the ground behind a log. It was not as
comfortable as a tree limb. Chris offered to bring me a lawn
chair the next day.
I invited Chris to stay with me and watch the excitement, but
he had not brought a jacket, and decided to head back to camp.
All I saw that evening was a deer and a coyote. The coyote came
to within 10 yards of me.
Thursday we had a horseshoe rematch. This time I got the
best of Chris. We headed back to the bait at 4 p.m. It had been
hit after I had left the night before. Chris stayed to watch this
time. At 8:15 we heard something above the bait. Chris said,
“Here he comes.” I got ready and kept watching. I thought the
bear was coming down one way and never saw him. Then I heard
Chris say, “He’s on the bait.” Sure enough he was. He walked
down a log and sniffed the bread and honey hanging in the tree.
He was broadside then, but I waited to make sure no cubs were
tagging along. He stepped off the log and was sniffing around
the bait and where Chris had been when he fixed the bait. Then
he turned broadside and I shot him with a 30:06, 168 grain
hollow point. The bear shook then started running, angling
towards us. My rifle hadn’t ejected the case when I shot and I
couldn’t get another round loaded. Chris was telling me to shoot
him again. I calmly yelled, “My gun’s jammed.” Finally after
several shots with the .44 mag. I got the rifle loaded and shot
the bear again. This time he dropped. The bullet entered behind
his shoulder and came out of his shoulder, entered his head
below his ear, and came out just over his eye. One shot, four

holes in the rug.
He was a beautiful dark chocolate color. He squared at 6’0”
by 5’5”. We took pictures, field dressed him and headed back to
camp. We grabbed a bite to eat, the lantern and the backpacks
and headed back. We skinned him on the ground right where he
fell, then boned the meat out. In two hours we had the packs
loaded and hiked out.
Chris finished skinning the head out and I hung the meat in a
tree, then went to bed. I wanted to get an early start for Texas.
After eating a good breakfast and saying goodbye to Chris, I
headed to town for dry ice and to get the bear checked by a game
ranger. By 9 a.m. I was on my way home.
What a hunt. I was excited all week. You know how you feel
when you see a big buck headed for you? That’s how I felt all
week. I could hardly eat.
After skinning and boning my bear. I know why I didn’t kill
the first bear with my bow. They have huge muscles on their
chests which they use for tree climbing. All I did was stick the
bear in those muscles. The next time I’ll know where to put that
arrow.
I was the only hunter in camp during my hunt. It was a super
vacation. I got to ask a lot of questions about bear, elk and Col-
orado hunting.
I hope to be able to return to Colorado on a bowhunt for elk
someday. There is a lot of country up there, and finding game is
not easy. When I go I plan to hire a guide, and Rawhide Advan-
tures knows where the game is. I need to see about getting a
volume discount on my hunts.
If a deer or elk hunt is in your hunting plans, I recommend the
services of Fred. They do have openings for this fall’s season.
