Them can be no question that for
many reasons the theatrical season In
San Antonio will be of Interest and im-
portance and It should he remunerative
to all concerned but whether It will or
not depends upon contingencies. Turner
opera house has been redecorated and
attumrs a more artlstla appearance.
Its stage haa been enlarged for Ihe pur-
pose ot admitting the extenslvo scenery
carried by some companies for the more
tllcctlve presentation of their plays and
which has hitherto been excluded for
wantof neoessary spaeo. Other arrange-
ments for comfort and convenience lias
been made and tho hall lias been Placed
In chargo or an able and experienced
manager. Tho seaion opens on Sunday
the 2Gth Inst. when Mclntyroit Heath's
minstrels appear. Then the tun or the
season commences. The new opera
house la progrexatng rapidly and
the contractor says It will bo
ready for occupation nbout De-
cember 20 It will be a bijou theatre
compact and convenient and will equal
anything that exists In the south Mr.
Rltcho has chargo or It and It is stated
that he Is doing all In his power to make
tho new venture an nrtiidla and financial
success.
t t t
One of the clouds that bang around
us are managerial disputes. It Is an
open secret (hat whilst Mr. Rlsche Is
still an esteemed member of tho Turners
there Is a serious professional spilt be-
tween him and that body which has Its
rise in circumstances attendant upon
Mr. Riiche's proposal to ro-leaae Tur-
ner opera bouse. Mr. Rische claims
that the Turners mado a contract with
him wliloh the Turners deny. When
tho Turners made other arrangements
for Ihe occupation of their opera bouse
Mr. Rlsche brought an Injunction suit
against them on the ground that such
action was a violation of bis contract
with tho Tnrncrs. The court decided
against Mr. Rlsclie but now Mr Rlsche
proposes to sue the Turners for dama-
ges caused by the violation of the said
contract.
t t t
There Is another cloud hangs around
wltli a threatening aspect and that is a
"misunderstanding" to uso a mild
phrase between tho Turners ami .Mr.
Ureenwall. When Oroonwall arranged
to book companies for tho Tumor opera
house It was the Impression R not the
distinct understanding that Orcenwall
would act In the Interest or tho Turners
ml hnnk for tho entire season. It seems
now that Mr. Urecn wall's bookings are
Intended to play at the Turner opera
bouse until tne new opera uouse n uuni
and then they will be transferred to tho
now house. There Is a lurking suspicion
that Oruenwall "while running with the
hare has been holding with the hounds"
nnd this fact has created considerable
dlisatlsractlon. Steps aro being quietly
taken to circumvent iiutiotiiion n any
exists. Some favor the plan of closing
tim house until Mr. Oreenwall hands
over tho contracts for tho entire season.
This would force Mr. Oreenwall to ac
cede to tho demand ot tho Turners or to
stand tho racket with tho companies
who expcot to play in tne t urner opern
houso.
Miss Emma Abbott Is a popular ar-
tiste and always has a warm welcome
In San Antonio. It has been stated that
she will visit San Antonio and will open
the new opera bouse 'lhere are many
reasons ror ner uoing tins aim me i.iuui
trust that she may yet perform that
pleasant task but It Is staled that her
management has cancelled all engage-
ments south of St. Louis and Intends
tho company to proceed to California
via St. Louis and Kansas city.
