A IiOVE TIFF.
Thev had a lore-ouarrcl. Ethan
'Nash and Tilly Fogg had been the
most earnest of lovers especially Tilly.
Ethan did not betray half the warmth
about It that she did because It never
was In him: but.it over man wanted
more devotion and affection and all
that sort of thing than Tilly Fogg gener-
ously lavished on Ethan Mash be must
hava boen an unnatural and exacting
fellow.
For some days they had been very
careful not to SDcuk to one another.
No two people ever tried so hard to
Do entirely inuiuurcnt cacn to ins
other.
At last It cot to be so bad that Ethan
bad stayed away from Tilly for two or
three weeks. How he managed to do It
was a mystery and always will be; it
can do expiainou oniy on principles oi
contraries and sulks and oddities.
It was getting to be rather unpleas-
ant considered in all points of viuw.
There was poor Tilly almost dying from
the treatment though she never would
hare entorod a complaint of any sort In
beginning to lose a little of its usual
brightness Icouldsoo it plainly enough
and the rod roses on her checks wore
fading ralhcr fast.
There bappenod to bo another young
miss In the village who had been teach-
ing the district school during the sum
mer and had Anally concluded that it
would bo the pleasantcst thing she
could do to stay through the winter too
and visit around. Just at this particular
time sho was staying at Squire Judkln's
nouse. tier name was i.ucy uoane.
Lucy Doane was just the smartest
girl in her own estimation I think I
ever know. Having boon selected to in-
struct the younger portion of the. chil-
dren the past summer in needlework
and a-b ab and being considered com-
petent to keep the smallest ones from
rolling off the benches whllo asleep
upon the floor she somehow reasoned
herself Into the complacent idea Jthat
there was no lady in the place who
could beat hor In conversation correct
grammar or indeed any of the accom-
plishments that were going.
She wore glasses with silver bows
mltti on her hands and always kept
her work-bag on her left arm A per-
fect picture of a "school-marm" In all
the person's parts and qualities.
At this particular time then was a
deep fall of snow on the ground and
the sleighing was glorious. Bells and
belles made tho old country roads mer-
IT. far and near. There were uartiea
without number to tho neighboring
towns making up merry' dances In
every old tavern-hall where the scrseoh

of tne tirtdlo had crer rcsotinnni. i
Well to make tho story as short as
possible Ethan rccolred a very neatly
written note ono afternoon from I.ucy
Doano. written III her characteristic
style of precision ami firmness all cor-
rectly phrased and spelled saying that
sho would be Very happy to uccept his
pollto Invitation to go to the next ball
over at Upflcld and would hold herself
in readiness accordingly
"What's all thlsl'rcxclalmcd Ethan

lie was tmzzlcii ami conioumicu.
"I never Invited Lucv Donna to CO to
the Upheld ball in my lifol Why what
docs sho mean I'm sura 1 don't know
how to proceed in such n easel"
Which was all norfectlv true. Ethan
Nash was In n regular quandary.
Bo no cam. rigui over to consult wiiu
me about It. Why he selected me out
of all the rest of his numerous acquain
tances In mo village I notcr Knew anil
1robahly never shall but hu came und
aid the matter plainly bcfnro me aud
sas he:
".low .John 1 want your nuvica"
"Yon shall have It with all my
heart" says I.
"I'm In n regular fix" said he. "You
tee tho way of It is this: Hero I'vo got n
letter from Lucy Doano" producing 11
from his pocket and holding It out at
arm's-length "and she says in that let-
ter that sho Is very happy to accept my
kind Invitation to go to tho sleighing
party tip to tJnllcld when the fact Is 1
never asked h.r to go with m. In my
life."
I could not help smiling.
"Rather awkward" I suegcsled.
"Isn't ItF Now I wish vou would tell
me what I'd belter do about It"
Dof"
'Yes. what would vou do? You see. I
must do something.''
uii certainly; mat letter must ix
answered somehow."
Then what would vou sar to It
How would you try to get out of It
John"
"I d un and thank her for accent ne."
said I "and then I'd secure a nlco sleigh
against th. time cume around and carry
her."
You would I The Old Harry must be
in youl"
"On th. contrary I assure you it's
just tho best thing you can possibly do.
Just take my adri e for once and see
what will come of It."
He hunt; down his head nut the noto
In his pocket and suffered himself to
think of IL
There was no chance of escatie. He
saw for himself thanks to his native
common-sense that the bust way to
silence mat nailery was to vrnif siraigju
up to It
Which he did. nud sent back Ills mes-
sage of thanks to Lucy for deigning to
comply with his request.
Tl. afternoon of the slelgh-rlde was
cold and biting us J oil would care to
read about Even ut noon tin; sun hud
not set a single Icicle to running ut tho
oar.s and the snow In the road-track
was as smooth and polished as mar-
ble. "I've got my sleigh" said Ethan to
me. In a rather confidential manner.
"It's lien Hall's cutter. He didn't want
to use it hiinielf. Jako'j going with a
two-horse establishment. But mind you
I had to pay for ill"
When the twilight advanced what
little there was otlint that time of tho
year I saw Kllian Nash driving up
pell-mell with ToniNlcklnson's fiery lit-
tle mare the cutter digging her heels
like a sledge after a reindeer. Ethan
bad as much as he could do to manage
her.
Subsequent to that slight glimpse of
tin an nuzxing Dy my winuotr as no
did I caught no other until I stood In
the little ball-room having ushered in
(as I thought) a very handsome young
ladv in a fancy dress with "lixlncs"
to correspond and taken n modest if
not decidedly timid survey of tho floor.
Therewas Ethan In full feather. He
was dressed "with all bis might" and
couldn't havo spared a single item of
his Inventory without damaglug his ef-
fectiveness decidedly. 1 fact ho meant
to tie killing.
Near where he stood sat Lucv Doane.
simpering and whimpering behind her
half-spread fan her round face as red
as a wasting winter-apple hor eyes up
turned to nim in an excecumgiy lan-
guishing style and lots of young girls
surveying them with feelings so mixed
that I shall b. excused from dose
them.
Dy the bye In came Tilly Fogg with
Edward Marks.
How Ethan did staro straight
at ner anu now sno uia stare straigm
back at him; I sat where I could sea It
all: and there were othors that saw it as
well. For a few minutes the friends
and acquaintances of each party w.ro
Instantly engaged in regarding their
conduct
Ethan Instantly threw his eyes up at
the opposite wall just as if there were
no such person as Tilly Fogg in the
room. On her part to exhibit a proper
degree oi resentment sne pursed her
pretty mouth gave her head a contempt-
uous toss and acted as independently
as It sh. was to lead olT In the dance

ful dress and with her beautiful colorl
What an air of quocnlv prido she
portrayed as she smoothed down the
glossy hair on hor temples aud looked
over the rustic crowd as if she knew
well enough that she was the belle of
tue evening.
Ethan stood a good way down the
floor and it was noticeable what an
everlasting chat bis fair partner Lucy
Doane kept up for him behind h.r
well-spread fan. Only once or twice
Ethan's eyes wandered up to where th.
llttlo figure of Till v Fogg was standing:.
but Lucy Doane watched every move-
ment and brought him back to his
senses again.
As for Till r. she was perfectly wretch'
ed though she did laugh and chatter so
much with h.r partu.r; tho young law
student There was excess In her
actions and that was enough to b.tray
her.
Anyone with ev.n half an eye could
see that at one Dut no doubt it as
sisted to heighten her beauty; for but
for this unhappy pressure on her prld.
and her self-will there would have been
no such suffusion about her cheeks nor
no such imperious expression about her
beautiful eyes.
"I don't sc. but what w. are really
making out a nice time of It" said'
Ethan to Lucv.
"This is flno very flnel" said Ed-
ward Marks to Tilly at about tb. sam.
moment
It was something of a coincidence
and deserving of a ehronlcler as her.
It finds one.
When we went down to supper the
confusion was excessive
They all rushed Into th. supper-room
In ft state bordering on. despair acting
i If Usra was but one ohanaa la
thousand of their ever getting nnotnar
mouiiiini to oat in tne world.
Tho tables groaned and so did those
who sat down to them before they got
up. There was a smart business don.
for somo time In the way of eating and
nungry ioms mtiriit nave looxou witn
hearty relish and envied thorn.
The party broko up toward early
morning dancers fiddlers and all. Dy
the dull light of tho stars that winked
and twinkled so steadllr far off in the
sky they sallied forth from before th.
door in tiieir sieigns lor uomo again.
Ethan and Lucy Doano felt consider-
ably sleepy on their way back and as
a consequence very little was said by
either during their brisk ride. As for
Tilly and the young student she was
entirely unhappy and ho was shall
I confess UP a very little "mashed!"
It was easy enough for everybody to
sco now that Ethan Nash and Tilly
loved one another and this show of In-
difference on their part was the greatest
piece of mere acting heartless and hoi-
ow Imaginable
Tho rost of us who knew all this and
more too from the beginning deter-
mined to put an end to it They had
been living on "stuff" a great while
longer than thoy ought to have done.
bo the next day tlicru was a concert-
ed arrangement mado among ourselrot
to bring them all together.
it was over at susan vt line s nouse
and tho hour was Just beforo tea.
First caino In hiban. Ho was trains:
round to dissipate tho day through and
wo knew at about what time he would
be there. Then followed Lucy Doane.
She was all smiles and syllables for
sho felt confident as alio ever wanted to
bo that sho hud at last won the heart of
Ethan Nosh.
In her presence however he was
rather quiet than otherwise.. Tho mo-
ment she came in lie stopped talking.
She saw It and half stopped too.
Ur-and-br who should run ud to the

for that was at the'bottom of tho ar-
rangement It could never have suc-
ceeded without her.
Sue camo clear into tho room before
sho knew who was there and the mo-
ment tho startling Intelligence revealed
itself through her eyes she made a
movement as If to have retreated with
precipitation had not Susan stood close
at her back and crowded her along so
as to shut tho door. There they were
then all together; not ono of tho three
unhappy parlies had previously thought
oi sucii a tiling.
'Now" said 1 to
i all bands "what's
the trouble?'
Yes" said Susie Wilde who was a
real good little girl "what is the matter.

held his tongue to save his life.

very unhappy. You needn't tell me
you are. not for I kuow well enough

only a poor feint of it.

Lucy was instantly as mad as a March

'He did Invito me. I d have you to

tacles anew uiron her nose.

"And I" alio hesitated In her con-

and started for tho door.
"I dou't care" said sho; "I'vo boen
engaged this over so long to the minis-
tor s son over in Fifield and now I'll
murry him!"
"1 would" amiably answered Ethan
not letting Tilly quito go out of his
arms.
And tbo party was made smaller by
tho sudden withdrawal of the brisk lit-
tle "school-marm."
Tho rest of us sat down to a supper
a real hearty country supper and a
grand good time wo made of It too.
Thcro was no more trouble for Tilly
and Etlian; their differences were all
healed.
