KENNY ROGERS JOINS RANGERS FOR THIRD STINT
ARLINGTON (AP) - Kenny Rogers is coming
back to the Texas Rangers, agreeing Monday to a $6
million, two-year deal. The team also bolstered its
bullpen by signing setup man Jeff Nelson to a one-
year contract.
The left-handed Rogers, whose career highlights
include a perfect game thrown for Texas in 1994, will
be joining the team for a third time. He also pitched
for the Rangers from 1989-95 and 2000-02.
His contract was pending a physical. The 39-year-
old Rogers will get $2.5 million this season and $3.5
million in 2005.

Men fall short of Aggies in Sun Belt opener
X-ucE Floyd
Staff Writer
An uncharacteristic lack of a
rebounding presence spelled
doom for NT in its Sun Belt
Conference opener Saturday
at the Super Pit. New Mexico
State dominated on the boards
against NT, dealing the Mean
Green a 70-67 defeat.
Prior to the loss, NT had
reeled off five consecutive
outings in which it out-re-
bounded its opposition, but
the Aggies managed a 14-
rebound advantage Saturday
night.
"They gave a second effort
and we didn't," said junior
guard Leonard Hopkins. "We
didn't get position on the
block like we should have and
it cost us."
In particular, it hurt NT in
the second half when they saw
a two-point lead turn into a 12-
point deficit in a matter of six
minutes.
The Mean Green held a 36-
34 lead at the half when New
Mexico State guard Dimne
John began to heat up. John
had made just two of 12 shot
attempts in the first half, but

went four of four from the
floor during a 14-4 run by the
Aggies and scored two baskets
after grabbing an offensive
rebound.
"When good players get go-
ing it's just hard to take them
out of their rhythm," said
Jerome Rogers, Mean Green
guard.
At six feet, six inches tall,
John was hard to stop when he
set his mind on taking over the
game.
"He is a very good basket-
ball player that stands at 6-6
so he can get up over you and
make shots," said NT head
coach Johnny Jones. "We did
a good job on him in the first
half, but in the second half he
did what good players do and
made plays."
John made enough plays to
put the Mean Green in a deep
hole, Hopkins would help lead
it out of.
After trailing by 12 points
with 11:58 on the clock, NT
managed to cut the deficit to
four with 4:51 left in the game.
Hopkins scored 11 of his 19
points in the final five minutes
of the game, but his last-sec-
ond three-point shot was only
enough to cut the Aggies' lead
to three as time ran out on the
comeback.
"[New Mexico State] did a
good job of taking us out of
our sets, so we had to go to
the hole and try to score that
way," said Hopkins, who got
the free throw line seven times
in the second half. "They had
great help on defense every
time we beat them off the
dribble, which made it tough
to score."
The New Mexico State pe-
rimeter defense limited NT
to just two field goals from

basket.

"They did a good job on
us defensively," Jones said.
"We made shots in the first
half but in the second half
when they doubled down on
Shawnson [Johnson], We did
not do a good job of reading
the defense and shots didn't
fall for us."
Johnson did his usual dam-

Road woes continue for Lady Eagles in loss

The NT women's basket-
ball (4-9, 0-1) team's trou-
bles continued as they fell
to rival New Mexico State
(7-6, 1-0) 83-72 in the Sun
Belt Conference opener at
the Pan American Center
on Saturday.
Although the Lady
Eagles came into the game
fresh off an impressive
59-43 victory over Texas
A&M Corpus Christi,
they could not keep the
momentum going as they
succumbed to a potent
Aggie attack that included
the Sun Belt Conference
Preseason Player of the
Year Sinnamon Garrett
and senior Princess Moore,
who had a game-high 29
points.
"I thought that we played
hard tonight, but there
were stretches where we
struggled on offense and
to come up with a defen-
sive stop when we needed
it," NT
coach
Tina
Slinker
said.

half, the offenses took over
as NT made an early run to
