NORTH TEXAS DAILY
NT" olleyball places second at home tournament
Blake Abbe
Staff Writer
Since 1976, the first Mean
Green Classic was hosted by the
NT volleyball team, and in that
timeframe, NT has never won
the tournament.
This year was no different,
as the Mean Green (2-8)
finished second and, along the
way, earned its first win of the
season.
The University of Wyoming
came out tournament cham-
pions, winning all three matches.
Centenary College finished third
at 1-2, and Prairie View A&M
finished in last place at 0-3.
The first match for the Mean
Green was Friday night against
Wyoming. Game one proved that
the volleyball team could match
the Cowgirls point for point. The
Mean Green would actually hold
a slight advantage early going
up 4-3, but that was the last lead
that it would see the whole game.
Even though the team had a
higher hitting percentage, .318
to the Cowgirls' .212, it was still
not enough as the opposition
scored three aces off of serve to
NT's one ace. The game would
end in defeat 30-27.
Close games were not easy
to win that night, as the Mean
Green would actually take the
lead in the next two games but
could not close them out. They
lost the next two 30-25 and 30-
28. The team dropped the two
games because it had 10 more
errors for the match, which is the
equivalent to giving the opposi-
tion 10 points.
"It was mental errors, andright
now we have to make some deci-
sions to win a game," head coach
Cassie Headrick said. "Until they
totally commit themselves to
it we are going to continue to
struggle."
The team did not struggle for
long, though, and it came out
the next day to win two matches
back-to-back two hours apart.
The first match on Saturday
was against Prairie View A&M.
The Mean Green was a little rusty
in the first game, down 3-1 early,
but the team eventually turned
on the burners and won, 30-17.
This game was not domina-
tion in the stats. NT only hit
.108 percent of its shots, and
committed eight errors in the
game. However, game two was
a different story. The team came
out firing and the offense was
moving with lightning quick
speed. By doing so, they were
able to hit the locations and take
advantage of hustle points.
"We just sped up our offense
and did things quick," Erica
Wendell, sophomore middle
blocker, said. "We just played
much better together, and we
celebrated on everything and
got excited."
The team certainly had every
right to be excited, and at one
point in the second game sopho-
more outside hitter Brooke Engel
served three straight aces. Before
this tournament the team had
only worried about locating
serves and not being aggres-
sive.
"We have just been trying to
talk about if you get someone
going, you should pick on them,"
Headrick said. "When you have
someone frustrated, they have a
hard time going for the ball."
The second game ended in a
30-13 blowout. The final game
of the match had both teams at
their best offensively, but the
Mean Green prevailed, 30-21.
The team committed 19 errors in
the match. Although, the main
focus was that it marked the first
win of the season.
"It feels awesome to get a win,"
Katy Prokof, sophomore outside
hitter, said. "I think we were
obviously afraid to win at the
beginning of the season, but
finally our phobia is over and it
is wonderful."
The Mean Green would also
capture second place in the
tourney's finale. The Centenary
Ladies put up its best fight, but
NT had too much momentum
from the previous match. They
won the match in three games,
30-20, 30-24 and 30-12.
In the third game, the Mean
Green hit a season high .696
percentage and finished with a
.295 for the match. In that same
game, the team committed no
attack errors and only one serve
receive error.
The volleyball team can not
dwell on these wins for too long
because they will be on the road
against Wichita State on Sept.
13.
