Mean Green
needs big game
from defense,
quarterback
Rían Johnson
Staff Writer
Troy State (1-3,0-0) and NT
(1-2,1-0) enter Tuesday night's
game in similar shape.
Both teams found them-
selves in bowl games at the
end of last season, but have
struggled thus far this year.
Like NT, Troy won its season
opener, but has not won a game
since.
"They have a good foot-
ball team," NT coach Darrell
Dickey said. "They have had
some rough outings, but
they have played some good
teams."
Troy enters the game aver-
aging over 250 total yards on
offense, netting the Trojans
just under 19 points per
game.
"They are expanding what
they do offensively to develop
a little more sophisticated
passing game," Dickey said.
"They are working with that
right now and it gives them
some added things for our
defense."
Trojans quarterback Carl
Meadows has completed 47
percent of his pass attempts
for 675 yards and three touch-
downs. While Meadows has

season for big games like Tuesday's with Troy.

struggled against tough Big
12 and SEC teams, Dickey is
impressed with the junior.
"Their quarterback is a good
player, he is a junior, has been
around a while and he knows
what he is doing," Dickey
said.
The Mean Green will need
a big game from its secondary
and pass rush if it expects to
stop the Trojans pass attack.
"Looking at them on film,
they were a smash mouth, hard
nosed football team and they
still are," Dickey said. "But
what they have added to their
offense is the ability when they
pick and choose to spread you
out and throw the ball and
they do."
With a thin secondary going
up against the Trojans passing
game that has featured seven
different receivers in every
game this season, it is impor-
tant for the Mean Green offen-
sive line to establish the run
early against a Trojans defense
that has struggled.
Troy is giving up an average
of 163.5 yard per game on the
ground so far this year. In addi-
tion, the Trojans are allowing a
completion percentage of over
68 for opposing quarterbacks
this year, for 210.8 yards per
game and six touchdowns.
While the Trojans have
allowed some big numbers so
far this year, the Mean Green
offense is not nearly as produc-
tive as Troy's opponents.
"Defensively, they have been
strong in the past when we
have played them and they
are very, very strong this year,"
Dickey said.
On the Edge
JohnnyQuinn
When the Trojans Pass
EDGE The Trojan offense uses many receivers. In each
of the first four games, the Trojans have used at least
seven receivers. The use of a lot of receivers will spread
the Mean Green secondary thin. Trojans junior quar-
terback Carl Meadows has thrown for 675 yards and
three touchdowns this season. Trojans quarterbacks
have thrown six interceptions this season.
Special Teams
iJJCsi Kickoff specialist Denis Hopovac will have
a very important role Tuesday night, limiting
Trojans kick return specialist Leodis McKelvin.
McKelvin is averaging over 29 yards per return
and returned a kick 100 yards last week for a
touchdown. Hopovac has routinely sent the
ball into the end zone and should neutralize McKelvin
on kick returns.
McKelvin is averaging nearly 13 yards per punt return
and has returned a punt for a touchdown as well this
season.
The Mean Green is averaging just over 17 yards per kick off
return and negative two yards each punt return.
Coaching
EDGE ()necanargue that the two coaches in Tuesday's
game are the two premier Sun Belt coaches, as
the two schools are the only two schools in the
conference to ever reach abowl game. With
NT winning the last meeting, and Dickey
always finding a way to win conference
games (see: Middle Tennessee), the toss up goes to
the Mean Green.
—Rian Johnson
When the Mean Green Run
The Mean Green's inability to run the ball DG \t
is the result of poor play from its offen-
sive line. Last week, the offensive line cut
down on the number of mistakes it made
as a unit. While the Mean Green ground
attack may not have flourished, a decrease
in mistakes from the offensive line means it is headed in
the right direction.
Itfaces a defense that has had some success stoppingthe
run. Troy limited both Cal Poly and South Carolina.
When the Mean Green Pass
The Mean Green quarterback unit EDGE
has struggled all season. It faces a Trojan
secondary thathas allowedits opponents a
68.4 completionpercentage. So far, NT has
not proven that it can stretch a defense, as
ithas consistently under thrown its receivers.
Not being able to get the ball down field will make the job of
the Trojan secondary much easier. NT needs to get receiver
Johnny Quinn active early in the game.
When the Trojans Run
The Trojans have only rushed for 100 E DCs 1
yards once this season through its first
four games. As awhole, the teamhasnetted
302yards on the ground, averaging just over
two yards per carry. The Trojans leading
rusher, JoelWThinghter, has gained 196 yards
the season, averaging near six yards a carry.

Watchout for
• Patrick Cobbs has rushed
for at least 100 yards in every
conference game of his career,
including this year's season-
opener at Middle Tennessee
State. Cobbs will likely be the
focal point of the Mean Green
offense and determine its level
of success.
• Mean Green defensive back
Aaron Weathers is having a
great season. He leads the team
in tackles with 31 and has one
interception to go along with a
forced fumble. Weathers will
be on alert to make a game
changing play.
• Stage fright might have an
impact on some of the younger
players making their first
national appearance on ESPN2.
It will be interesting to see if
these players rise to the occa-
sion or shy from the spotlight.
• Nick Bazaldua has not been
given a chance to prove his
worth in the first three games.
The Lou Groza Award candidate
had two field goal opportuni-
ties in the seasonopener against
Middle Tennessee, but came up
just short on a 52-yard attempt
into the wind and had his other
attempt blocked.
