Soccer team takes unbeaten streak to Sun Belt play
Slavonic, Hutyra
lead Mean Green
in conference
openers
Michael Neglia
Staff Writer
Dani Slavonic must like
playing soccer against South
Alabama.
The sophomore forward
scored the game-winning
goal against the Jaguars in
overtime to give NT a 2-f
victory on Sunday. She also
scored the game winner in
the waning moments of last
year's conference tourna-
ment meeting.
"It was a mess, there was
about ten people in there
[the box], and somebody got
a shot and I got the rebound
in," Slavonic said. "[Beating
South Alabama] seems to be
a pattern with me."
The win extended the
Mean Green's (7-2-2) (2-0)
unbeaten streak to nine, and
coupled with a 4-0 victory
over Troy on Friday, gave NT
a 2-0 start in Sun Belt play.
"I think we really needed to
get both wins this weekend,
because we're getting ready
to go on the road next week,
and it's always extremely
tough trying to win games
on the road." John Hedlund,
head coach, said.
Despite winning, NT
played the entire first half
sloppy and out-of-sync en
route to a scoreless tie at
halftime.
"We just seemed flat. We
were never able to get into
a rhythm," Hedlund said.
"Maybe the wind had some-
thing to do with that, but it
just didn't seem to flow for
us today."
The Mean Green continued
its sloppy play into the
second half and fell behind
1-0 after sophomore forward
Sue Aherns scored a goal in
the 65th minute of play for
South Alabama.
Sophomore forward
Heather Hutyra tied the
game in the 78th minute on
a breakaway after missing
several chances to tie the
game, including a shot off
the crossbar.
The Mean Green held
a significant edge in the
statistics of the second
half and overtime, holding
a 16-4 edge in shots on goal,
after only outshooting the
Jaguars 7-5 in the first half.
NT recorded 11 corner kicks
throughout the game.
The referees called a very
tight game as NT had 19 fouls
and South Alabama had 16
throughout the game.
Hutyra led the Mean
Green with eight shots
and freshman midfielder
Kelli Lunsford and junior
midfielder Kristen Campbell
each recorded five shots for
the game.
NT eased its way through
the conference opener
against Troy.
The Mean Green started
the scoring early, with
freshman midfielder
Brittany Cleveland scoring
in the 12th minute of the
game off of a deflection after
Hutyra crossed the ball.
Three minutes later, junior
forward Jamie Yates scored
the second goal of the game
from Hutyra's second assist
of the game.
In the 19th minute, Hutyra
scored from 15 yards out to
give the Mean Green a 3-0
cushion.
Lunsford scored her
second goal of the season
in the 50th minute from a
penalty kick to finish the
game's scoring at 4-0.
NT dominated the statis-
tics of the game, outshooting
Troy 28-7 for the game with a
12 - i edge on corner kicks.
The Mean Green's next
game is Friday at La.-
Lafayette, and the next home
game is Oct.14.
