Brock's political career ends
ity mayor leaves office, plans to travel, spend time with ámily
By Crystal Barbour
Staff Writer
After six years of running City
Council meetings, implement-
ing new policies, and listening to
complaints from residents, Mayor
Euline Brock's third and final
term is coming to an end.
Brock said she has enjoyed her
time as mayor, but when her term
ends on May 23, she is looking
forward to taking some time to
relax with her family.
"I'm a really old person," Brock
said. "I am way past the time that
most people fully retired. I just
want to take a nap, read a book,
that sort of thing."
Brock said she and her husband
also have plans to visit their chil-
dren and grandchildren who live
in other states, and she hopes to
write a history of Denton, but not
for publishing purposes.
Brock became a part of the city
government long before she was
elected mayor in 2000. She spent
several years serving on the City
Council, which led to her decision
to run for mayor.
"Being on City Council for six
years is the best preparation for
being mayor," Brock said. "I real-
ly began to realize how the deci-
sions that this City Council deter-
mined what kind of community
we have and what kind of life we
live. I felt like nothing good was
going to happen to Denton until
someone brought the community
together."
Brock said being on the council
has shown her how important the
Euline Brock
decision making of the council is
and how bad decisions hurt thou-
sands of Denton residents. She
also said it helped her learn the
importance of compromising in
order to get things done.
"I'm willing to accept that get-
ting 95 percent of what you want
is good," Brock said. "You don't
have to go for 100 percent, which
was the general mentality of the
council [in the past]."
John Cabrales, a public infor-
mation officer for the city of Den-
ton, said Brock brings many good
leadership qual ities to her job.
"[Mayor Brock] is a good con-
sensus builder," he said. "She
knows how to bring different el-
ements together to get resolution
and move forward.
She is also by education a his-
tory professor, so she understands
the value of knowing what has
been tried in the past and the im-
portance of gathering data. She
doesn't just accept what is com-
mon belief. She researches to de-
termine if it is factually correct."
Brock has played many political
roles in Denton including serv-
ing as president of the Metroplex
Mayors, an association for may-
ors in the Dallas/Fort Worth area,
and being a member of the North
Central Texas Council of Govern-
ments.
"The really important thing I
think is knowing that you are able
to have some impact on what kind
of community you live in," Brock
said. "Feeling that what I do re-
ally makes a difference and is im-
portant in determining the future
of this community is the greatest
satisfaction I've had as mayor."
