The imperialistic vain display.
For which the Roosevelt factions strive.
Has had its day—has passed away-
Now reason may resume its sway.
And liberty will yet survive.
Yet .till, throughout a mighty land,
A nation’s heart beats gratefully,
To that small band, of courage grand,
Who hand to hand, made gallant stand
Against the red-coat soldiery.
All honor to those men of old,
Who struck the blows that made us free!
Their hearts are cold that were so bold,
Their hands are mould, that then unrolled,
The rebel’s flag on land and sea—
Throughout our grand, state’s broad extent.
Let patriotism’s fires grow bright—
Clouds o’er us bent at last are rent.
Through them star-beams fair gleams have sent—
Fast coming day dispels our night—

Mr. Nolen, when seen a short time I
after the-.hooting occurred by a re-
porter for The Statesman, sald that
the trouble was about some hogs, and
that he considered himself very lucky
to be alive to relate his exciting expe-
rience. “You see,” said he, “Johnson
has had five of my hogs at his place
for some time. They got away from
me and strayed out In that part of the

he would hold them for the damage

times about getting the hogs, and in
I fact we had trouble about the hogs
I before yesterday, but nothing serious.
11 finally decided that if I wanted to
get my property the best thing to do
was to take an officer with me. So
this morning I got Mr. Brodie to go

ling close to my head. He attempted

grabbed him and took the gun before-
he accomplished his purpose.”
The deputy constable’s story was
substantially the same as that of
I Nolen. Mr. Brodie said that he was
