Country album hits high, low note
Album's sound
resembles 90s
country style

Darren Kozelsky's debut album
Let Your Mind Fly from Boo
Hatch Records moves along at
a smooth and upbeat pace, rem-
iniscent of an afternoon drive
just to enjoy the weather, and is
a refreshing reminder of '90s
era country music.
Opinion
The bittersweet ballad "Cool
Grass," with a tune I might
imagine on a cattle trail, makes
for an unlikely opening track.
However, it does transition
well to "Messed Up In Love,"
a sweet and upbeat love song
about finding one's place in the
world through love.
Moving along into "Mind
Over Matter," the simple rhymes
and cheesy lyrics such as "You
made me mad as a hatter/Mind
over matter" are easily forgiv-
able due to a catchy melody and
traveling beat that's all classic
country without a hint of the
more recent permeations of
rock and pop seen throughout
the genre. I can see this track
becoming a karaoke bar clas-
sic.
Kozelsky's got heart, too, and

"Name on Her Wing," though
a bit short, is a beacon in the
dark, a hopeful tune about a
guardian angel coming just in
time since "I've been walking
through hell," he sings.
This theme repeats in "Oth-
er Side of the Morning," two
tracks later, as Kozelsky croons
in hope of "Fly me away...In
the arms of an angel" through
a tough spot in life.
The album speeds up again
with the aptly named "Running
Kind" about a restless soul ea-
ger to leave home but quickly
slows tempo in the next song
"Only Just Your Friend." Kozel-
sky picks up in the following
track with driving bass guitar
in "Down Into the Black."
Though most of the songs
stand alone well, the tracks are
ordered strangely with fast and
slow tempos interrupted, mak-
ing it difficult to listen to the
album straight through.
The recurring themes of faith
and hope, in spite of broken
hearts and hard knocks, give the
album an overall uplifting feel-
ing, especially the song "Love
Lays Before You (When You
Least Expect it)."
Kozelsky voices the old adage
"When you stop looking well
you just might stumble/And
find yourself falling in love"
with perfect melody that I doubt
anyone could help but smile and
sing along to. I had to set that
one on repeat a few times.
Let Your Mind Fly almost ends
with a sunny note in the twangy
guitar melody of "Standing in
a Moment," a lighthearted love
song about two people meeting
in a dance hall and watching the
stars at night. It makes me want
to find someone with whom I
could go two-stepping.
At the end of the album, there
is a hidden track that sounds like
a dulcet lullaby until Kozelsky
tries and sorely fails to "oooh"
some high notes, making me
cringe a bit. Let's just loop back
to another song.
Kozelsky definitely has some
great songs on his debut album.
Country fans should check it out,
but remember to hit "shuffle."
