dramatic interest is woven about the

Only two city officers filed their
reports for the month of September
yesterday, those being Chief of Police
Montgomery and City Clerk Johnson.
Chief Montgomery’s report shows
that during the month thirty-seven ar-
rests were made, divided as follows:
Quinlan, 1; Jones, 7; Tannehill, 6;
Owen, 1; Pyburn, 1; Wilson, 3; Brack-
en, 1; Falwell, 6; Evans, 8; Pierce, 2;
Jones, 1; Bustin, 2; Gibson, 1.
The number of arrests made is the
smallest for some months, and indi-
cates that good order has prevailed
throughout the city during the month.
City Clerk Johnson’s report shows
that a total of 85192.56 was drawn
against the general fund. The report
of the expenditure of the road and
bridge fund has not been completed.
The warrants were as follows: Sal-
ary of officers and employes, 81189.98;
salary of policemen, $945; salaries of
aldermen, 8135; salary of keeper of
Pease park, $40; City cemetery, 822.90;

tionery and postage, >48.98; miscella-

The report of City Physician Graves
for the month of September shows
that there were five cases of diphtheria
in the city during the month. The only
other contagious disease present was
scarlet fever, one case of which was
reported. Six deaths occurred at the
city hospital and twenty-nine patients
were in the institution at the close of
the month. The report also shows
eighty-seven paupers’ prescriptions to

The interest around the court house!
is centered in the call of the criminal
docket in the county court next Mon-1
day.
The grand jury returned nearly 200 ,
misdemeanor indictments, and all these
will have to be called and disposed of.
Judge Hamilton has not yet return-
ed from his huneymoon, but is expect-
ed home on October 6, and will no
doubt be on hand to take charge of his
court at that time.
It is not very probable that the time
required for disposing of the docket
will be rather long, as it is said a num-
ber of the misdemeanor indictments
will be contested. It has generally been
the custom for the majority of those
indicted to plead guilty, but It is stated
on good authority that such will not be
the case at this term.
It was stated yesterday that a firm -
of lawyers had made a proposition to
those indicted for gaming that they
would take all their cases and contest
them if they would pay them >15 for
each acquittal, they to receive no fee
in case of conviction. This proposi-
tion is now under conviction.
