Sounds of pool chalk
grinding against the tips of
cues and racked billiards balls
being thundered apart will
once again fill the dimly lit
Syndicate Tuesday nights in
the University Union.
The NT Billiards Club prac-
tices weekly from 6 to 9 p.m.
and allows the 60 members a
balance of time to prepare for
tournaments without having
to sacrifice time allotted for
work and study.
"You can go on that Tuesday
night for three hours, and only
go on that Tuesday for three
hours, and still do well in tour-
naments," Billiards Club pres-
ident Morgan Fasset said.
The club is attempting to
build off the success it had last
spring when it sent one of its
members to nationals. Club
member Justin Cromer placed
sixth in the Association of
College Unions International
9-Ball tournament at the
University of Houston.
Cromer advanced to the
national tournament in
Tucson, Ariz.
"It was amazing," Fasset
said of his teammate's
success.
NT will host its first billiards
tournament of the semester
Nov. 8 inside the Syndicate,
but Fasset is currently working
on moving it to JR Pockets at
1127 Fort Worth Drive because
the club is bigger.
"Because the Syndicate has
so much less space since the
bagel shop is there, we can't
hold it anymore," he said.
According to Billiards
Club adviser and Syndicate
manager Sergio Renovato
there were already plans in
place to renovate certain
areas of the Syndicate before
construction of Einstein Bros.
Bagels because of a decreased
popularity in billiards.
The game has lost much
of its popularity, just like
poker, and not just on the
NT campus but nationwide,
Renovato said.
"I hope they don't make the
decision solely on the restau-
rant being here," Renovato
said.
The first tournament the
club will attend is hosted by
the University of Texas. It will
be at Fast Eddie's Billiards
outside of Austin on Sept.
27.
Other colleges competing
in the tournament include
Texas A&M University,
Baylor University, Texas Tech
University, the University of
Houston and Sam Houston
State University.

he Script: Its time or some botball
Opinion
By Benjamin Gooding
Senior Staff Writer
It is fall. The leaves will be
falling soon. The Pennant race
is about to begin in baseball,
and all that Olympic talk is
finally over.
Let's talk football.
To start it off, if you are a
Cowboys fan, the National
Football Conference must feel
like it is yours right now. Grant
it, there are several reasons to
feel this way.
For starters, Favre is no
longer playing in the NFC. The
would-be retiree has decided to
Ben Gooding
take his career to the Jets so he
can now pester the American
Football Conference East.
The Packers really are
nothing to worry about, either.
On Monday night, Aaron
Rodgers went 18-for-22 and
passed for only one touchdown
in a game that should have
been a little more lopsided
against the Vikings. Sorry,
but we wont be talking about
either team come January.
Next, Seattle has to get
its act together if it plans on
contending this season. This
past weekend, the Buffalo Bills
completely destroyed them in
a 10-34 loss.
Next weekend the Seahawks
go up against the San Francisco
49ers, and if they lose that
one we will know for sure that
there will not be a repeat of
2006's botched snap.
It is time for a reality check.
The NFC East is good. The
Giants are not going anywhere,
and the Eagles could be some-
thing to worry about. Donovan
McNabb had three touchdowns
and went for 361 yards on only
21 completions Sunday. We will
see how they do next Monday
night against Dallas.
In addition, the Cowboys
have a relati vely hard schedule.
Green Bay at Lambeau Field
and the Steelers in Pittsburg
will not be easy wins by any
means, not to mention the
away games they have to play
against their division rivals in
Philadelphia and New York.
There are no other teams in
the NFC that I can see hanging
with any of the top echelon of
the AFC. The Colts, Chargers
and Pittsburg are all potential
teams that could be waiting in
February, and if anyone has
the personnel to contend in the
NFC, it is the Cowboys.
