automobiles and trucks Moskvich
and MAZ-200.”
The Moskvich, a small four-door
sedan with a 32-horsepower, four-
cylinder engine,. is advertised to
sell for 142,700 pesos. That’s around
$3,000 at the present free market
exchange rate. The firm’s MAZ-200
truck is listed at 297,700 pesos (ap-
proximately $6,250).
Such prices sound high but the
cars are the cheapest for sale in .
Argentina. U. S. Fords and Chev-
rolets run afound $8,500. ;
One reason is the low price the 1
Russians set originally. Another is
the Argentine surtax on foreign :
cars, which rises steeply from :
80,000 pesos (about $1,700) on the 1
small Russian and European makes ,
to 275,000 pesos on Fords and Chev-
rolets.
The Russians have installed cul- I
tural centers in at least nine of Ar-
gentina’s major cities. These spon-
sor lectures, publications, movies
and other forms of propawanda.
The center in Mendoza also gives
Russian language courses.
The commercial attache at the
Czech Embassy, Karel Almasy,
toured the country’s interior in
March. At Tucuman he promised
local businessmen his Communist
government' stands ready to supply
Argentina with machinery and oth-
er needed goods.
Soviet violinist Leonid Kogan
recently wound up a well-publi-
cized series of performances here.
Last month a group of eight Ar-
gentines left for a three-week visit
to Russia. Russian movies are shown ।

The meeting was called to order
at 3 p.m. by Mrs. Cowan, the chair-
man, with eleven members answer-
ing roll call. The lesson for the aft-
ernoon was on “Jacob” ably and
interestingly given by Mrs. E. M.
Munroe.
Various activities of the church
were discussed during the business
session, followed by a delightful
social hour at which time the host-
ess, assisted by Mrs. Munroe passed
a delicious dessert plate and Har-

The next meeting of the Circle
will be June 7 in the home of Mrs.
Benjamin West, 413 Barnes Street.

Communist Products
Can Be Bought in
Latin Americas
BUENOS AIRES. — You can buy
a new Russian car in Argentina.
You can also shop for Czech
trucks and Hungarian factory ma-
chinery.
And if you are curious about life
in the Soviet Union, a Soviet cul-
tural center will be happy to ex-
plain all about it.
Indications are that Russia has
opened a trade and cultural offen-
sive to win friends and customers
in this Southern Hemisphere coun-
try of 19 million. The drive is ap-
parently a direct follow-up of the
economic lure dangled before Latin
America recently by Soviet Pre-
mier Bulganin.
Bulganin told an interviewer his
government is ready to furnish
technical aid and more trade to
Latin America. He cited as likely
Soviet exports industrial equip-
ment, timber, oil, cement, chemi-
cal products and agricultural ma-
chinery. He said Russia would take
numerous diverse Latin-American
products.
The best indication that the
Kremlin means business is a re-
port from Moscow that Soviet trade
expert Anastas Mikoyan, a first
deputy premier, plans to visit Ar-
gentina and other Latin-American
nations soon.
An outfit called “Moskvich Ar-
gentina,” with an announced capi-
tal of 2% million pesos (around
$52,500), has opened a swank show-
room in Buenos Aires. The firm
bills itself as ‘exclusive distributors
