Here’s the prettiest selection of gifts in many a Moth-
er’s Day, because we know you want the best! We
know, too, that she would love something to wear, so,
see our lovely array of gift ideas!
By HERMAN K. BUNDESER, M.C.
HARDLY a day passes out that
new discoveries helpful to people
of all ages are being brought
forth. For example, plastics are
now helping older people recover
from fractured hips which were
formerly a serious problem.
Any fracture is usually more
serious in an older person, for his
bones and tissues do not mend as
quickly or as well as those of the
youth. This difficulty is multiplied
when the broken bone is as large
and Important as the hip joint.
Enforced inactivity
setting a break and putting it in
a cast meant that the person had
to lie in bed for a long period of
time—as long as a year when the
healing was slow.
An older person cannot stand
this inactivity as well as a young
person, and may develop many
complications, such as pneumonia
and blood clots in the veins of the
legs. Clots are especially danger-
ous as they may work loose and
travel to the heart or brain.

Many older people who would not
have survived a broken hip were
walking again soon after surgery.
Serious Problem Remained
A fractured head of a thigh
bone remained a serious problem,
however, even with pins. Many
times, after pinning, the head of
the bone would die and doom the
person to became a permanent
cripple.
A plastic bone replacement can
now be used in this complication.
The head of the thigh bone
(femur) is removed and a plastic
head inserted in its place. With
this type of operation, an aged
person can walk within three
weeks of the time of the fracture.
Thus, orthopedic surgeons and
modern chemists have worked to-
gether to overcome a dangerous
threat to older people, and have
actually lengthened their lives.
QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
D. W.: I have been told that I
have fibroid tumors of the womb.
Is there any way in which I can
have this condition cured except
by surgery?
Answer: Usually, the best treat-
ment for fibroid tumors is their
surgical removal. However, cer-
tain cases can be helped by ra-
dium or X-ray treatments.

for your summer supplemental
pastures. Last year two dairy-
men. L. T. Summerlin and A. T.
Buckner, West New Hope com-
munity. used Sweet Sudan and
Chinese Red Cow Peas. Horace
Thompson, Green Hill, used
Loreda Variety Soy Beans and
had good results. There is very
definite need for supplemental
pastures during July and Aug-
ust. Last year it paid off even in j
the hot dry weather and with a
favorable summer it should pay
even greater dividends.

PECAN INSECTS
In order to help get a good
crop of pecans, it is necessary to
spray for the pecan nut case-
bearer. The pecan nut casebearer

moth lays their eggs on the tip
end ot tne pecans and they can
be seen with the naked eye in
5 to 7 days the eggs hatch and
the worms move down the twig
to which the nut cluster is at-
tached and start feeding on the
second or thind lend below the
cuts. After feeding for four or
five days on the buds they move
back on the nut cluster and enter
the pecan through a small hole
which they eat out at the base.
It is during this period, when
the eggs are laid and the time
that the worms are feeding on
the buds (10 to 12 days) that the
spray should be applied for best
results.
Anyone interested in the pro-
per spray to use for the nut case-
bearer, contact the County
Agent’s office and get a copy of

Controls.”
