DALLAS un—The Southwest Con-
ference faculty committee opens a
session today that may bring in
the league's first new member in
33 years.
Texas Tech is up for a vote once
more and its backers are exceed-
ingly optimistic that the big West
Texas college will crack the tight
barrier. Athletic Director DeWitt
Weaver of Tech said he thought
the school had its best chance yet
of making it.
Five votes are needed and Tech
expects to start out with three
known backers—Texas Christian,
Baylor and Texas. Arkansas and
Texas A&M are considered the
pivotal points, with Rice and South-
ern Methodist not likely to come
over.
The faculty committee meets
this afternoon, tonight and tomor-
row morning and its deliberations
will be revealed at a press confer-
ence about noon tomorrow.
Athletic directors and head foot-
ball coaches met yesterday after-

how any coach in the district
could vote for boys on an offen-

R E. Dodson and Lanny Verner,
who were the top of the crop at
their positions, "Is pretty hard to
understand.
My guess is that maybe its just
because they were from Mt.
Pleasant I’ll even go so far as
to say there are some boys on
the squad who couldn't carry
their helmets.
However, picks 9 paper sel-
dom prove anything, as is evi-
dent by some of the past All-
State selections from several that
are recalled to our minds.
Some mighty good boys from
the district received enough pub-
licity to get picked on the All-
State teams of the larger papers.
Recalling a few, there were Billy
Jack Meredith and Dale Brake-
bill of Mt. Vernon, David Groce
of Pittsburg and Bobby Dodd of.

Included among these were the
present Mt. Pleasant coach, Herb
Zimmerman and Gene Fleming of
Mt. Vernon, Waylon Buchanan of
Naples, Huey Keeney and Charles
Smith of Mt. Pleasant, and the
latest all-conference selection,
Forrest Gregg of Sulphur
Springs, who co-captained the
SMU Mustangs of 1955.
As I recall, Smith,: 1954 Baylor
co-captain, and Gregg, also, had
hard times making the all-dis-
trict selections by the coaches in
this district.
I suppose it’s just natural for
sports writers to lean toward
their, home town performers,
which- we don't deny either, but
the All-District selections are
made by coaches—who, of all
things, can't nominate or vote for
boys they probably know more
about than all the other coaches
in the district combined.

Jim Swink of Texas Christian
University Thursday officially
was named the 1955 major col-
lege football scoring champion
tnrough the NCAA service bureau
statistics. -
These figures showed that the
Rusk, Tex., speedster, who en-
tered TCU on a basketball
scholarship and was converted to
football, collected 125 points on
20 touchdowns and 5 conversions.
He led the way in both scoring
and “touchdown responsibility.”
Swink is the first Southwest
Conference player to win the
scoring title since Joel Hunt in
1927 and thus joins an illustrious
list of 20-touchdown scorers.
The only players in 35 years
to make more than 20 were Ken
Strong, Gene McEver, Bobby
Reynolds, Wilton (Whizzer)
(Arizona State, 1950), Ollie Mat-
son and Art Luppino.
Hugh Pollard of TCU. the mop-
