surrounded by a battery of high-
priced law talent, to dlend one of
those who made violence during
the strike. As far as I have been
able to learn, the delense was bas-
for the union in 1956 when a strike
was called. In the 1955 negotiations,
it was Dixie who tried to make a
contract and falling. ordered his
committee home for a strike. In a
last-minute move, Martin Burns
shoved Dixie aside and reached an
agreement with the company, thus
averting another strike

Dixie evidence any concern over
thy men who wer loyal to their
company, their jabs and their con-

kept paying teir dues. His prin-

In recommending the maximum
sentence of two years ia the peni-
tentiary. the jury of citizens is-
sued a strung warning that vio-
lence will not be tolerated. In re-
commending that the sentence be
suspended, the jury availed itself
ol the privilege at extending mercy
to one whose previous vecord had
been good, and Judge Looney Lind-
sey wisely followed the jury’s rec-
ommendation in imposing the sen-
tence.
As previously mentioned, the de-
fendant was represented by a bat
tery of four outstanding lawyers.
Two were highly regarded "local"
barristers from Longview and Min-

criminal lawyer and the fourth
was Chris Dixie.
