Rumor that Fort Brown
Will Be Abandoned.
Written for The Hekald.
Dame Rumor has it again that
in high official circles they are dis
cussing the advisability of aban-
doning Fort Brown. Abandon this
post and 3-011 will turn the lower
Rio Grande valley over to bandits
robbers cattle thieves and smug-
glers. The awe that a small picket
of clmqueias azules (blue coats)
lias over the evil of this frontier
is almost incomprehensible. In
the SO's when Mauricio Cruz was
terrorizing the Mexican side from
Matamoros to Camargo a corpor-
al's guard of U. S. soldiers was
stationed at Edinburg and all was
quiet on this side.
An incident in connection with
that time is remembered by the
writer. The Mexican colonel com-
manding at Reynosa required
hordes for his troop and was com-
pelled to came to this side to buy
them lie imprudently landed on
this side with three soldiers and a
veterinary surgeon all armed. The
corporal immediately arrested
them. The writer recognized them
as soldiers of the regular Mexican
armv. They were released the
colonel bought his horses and re-
turned. This valley is fast overcoming a
long felt want in the way of good
American farmers with capital and
energy. Several sugar plantations
are producing fine sugar in paying
quantities stockmen are coming
among us with improved stock and
all we need is the protection of the
strong arm of Uncle Sam that our
good and law abiding people may
work in peace and harmony and
this late wilderness will soon be
converted into a paradise. Pages
have been written of its possibili-
ties tiere llowers bloom the trees
are evergreen. Two crops are
grown annually with land sus-
ceptible of irrigation and the Rio
Grande with water for the millions
and a health -invigorating cli-
mate. Abandon Fort Brown and you
will transform this buddiug pros-
perity into a howling wilderness
the neat farm house that has re-
placed the jactil (hut) will soon be
laid in ashes the cultivated fields
grow up in brambles and ehapparal
and the good people ruined if not
murdered.
The old settlers of this frontier
have a vivid recollection of the
early GO's of the Cortina raid and
many other dark aud bloody deeds
that were enacted when the only
protection was the trust' six-
shooter That was when Fore
Brown was temporarily abandon
ed. What few are left don't want
to see it repeated which will be
the inevitable result of another
abandonment.
From a military standpoint we
are opposite the largest town in
northern Mexico where a large gar-
rison is maintained and it is meet
thatJt garrison should be continued
here also to say nothing of the
propriety of having Old Glory

The .San Antonio Express of re-
cent date has the following account
of an industry which promises to
become one of importance iu the
lower Rio Grande valley on both
the Mexican and Texas sides :
"Engineer Manuel M. Mendiola
the proprietor of the San Vicente
Hacienda situated near Matamoros
has given some attention to the
cultivation and propagation of
vineyards raising a fine quality
of grapes which are very abnudant
and has been engaged in manu-
facturing wines with an excellent
result. The claret manufactured
there is pronounced by many as
superior to the California wines
and an alcoholic beverage known
as "agna ardiente de nva" (grape
juice whiskey) is pronouueed of
good quality and rinds ready sale.
This is another of the great
enterprises that abound on the
Rio Crande and which only await
the hand of capital to develope
the industry aud the country.
Mr. Mendiola is principally en-
gaged in the cigar business and
i has only been experimenting with
