or the suffering it had caused.
Only after considerable pres
sure by legal officials, during
which it was pointed soutithathei
himself could be held he a mat-4
erial witness in the case. did he.
reluctantly sign, a complaint
against Mrs. lavarone. t
Even then, as he left the con-'
frence, the young father mur-
mured stubbornly: "It is not a.
matter for the state. It is for
God to decide.”
To man, the attitude of Mr.
and Mrs. Chionchio must seem
incrediably naive The instinct for
revenge and retribution is over-
whelmingly strong in most of us.
and when someone hurts us we
want to hurt them back Just as
soon as we are able to. ------
We pay lip service to the idels
of forgiveness, turning the other
cheek, and doing unto one anoth-
er as we would have them do
unto us. But in our daily life we
often don’t live up to these ideals.
We turn to the older law. of fang
. and claw.
It is inconceivable, certainly for
most of us, to think that Mrs
lavarone, if proved both sane
and guilty, should go unpunish-
ed.bx.th laws of man.
But it is unimportant whether
Mr. and Mrs. Chionchio are right
or wrong. In, an angry world,
surely sicker and just as on-
fused in many ways as the wom-
an. who stole their baby, their
Christian 4.charity under stress
stands as d bright beacon of true
faith.
Instead of retailiation, they
have responded to this blow
against their happiness and fam-
ily security with forgiveness, a
reach for understanding, and a
desire that a higher judge decide
the casejat---—-■ .-.'.J—.
