Kempner: Many thanks for your kind letter of several days ago inviting me to join the Knife and Fork Clubs. I am thoroughly acquainted with the Knife and Fork program having been a member for several years in Fort Worth and judging by the schedule in the l952-53 program, the Galveston organization has a banner season ahead of it. However, it is a rare occasion now when Mrs. Leavell and I attend public functions and when she is able to go out, she prefers that it be in a visit with friends or of a social nature for obvious reasons. She spends about half of her time in bed during which she keeps the radio busy and consequently prefers to hear anyone except a speaker on World problems. 'Too, it seems that definite scheduled events happen to hit us on days that she is unable to go out. Thanking you again for your kind invitation and hoping that you and Mrs. Kempner have a most enjoyable trip and vacation at Lake Placid, I am V 'nc erely yQ, DCL:jb
