i"HK Hkkald is authorized to announce
the name of
Hon. J. N. Garner
s a- (Jiuiiitdate for C mtjress rrom this
fvfae Fifreenth District subject to the
Democratic Nominating Convention.
"WEDNESDAY AUGUST 13 1902.
IX TUB FIFTEENTH.
It is announced thut Mr. J. B.
2)ibrell the unsuccessful candidate
If or democratic congressional honors
in the Fifteenth district will take
Hie stump for the nominee.
This is not a surprise to Mr.
-Dibreli's friends and acquaintances
Mat it is a jolt to the republicans
-who have been counting upon at
t?ast a lukewarm attitude from him
. -md a positively undemocratic 'at-
titude from some of his supporters.
3Ir. InbreLl is. a ..good democrat. He
-tvas a member of the platform com-
mittee of Galveston and those who
know him have never doubted his
Joy alt y. lie is a strong man a clean
nan and his assistance in the cam-
paign will be valuable.
John K Garner the nominee is
i first-class campaigner. In thought
..:ind manner .close to the people
ilert in debate .untiring in the ad--roeacy
of his cause he may be de-
fended upon to poll the full strength
i ii the party.
It is not strange that Mr. Scott
ike republican candidate first
Thought to engage in no joint de-
bates. Besides Garner andDibrell
jrreat democrats from other parts of
rhe State will rally to the Fifteenth
i listrict and the democratic gloc-
crine that will awake the ecloes
. lions the Rio Grand" will be ait-
- cle too much for even so clever
gentleman as Mr. Scott.
With the democrats united Mr.
-eott might save himself a great
leal of trouble and expense by de-
? -lining to speak at all. Houston

Tire King Crowther company
- vvhich claims to have discovered oil
in paying quantities in Atascosa
ounty and has founded a town
near its oil well by the name of
-Crowther is alleged to be about to
build a railroad from San Antonio
-. to the new town. It is said that the
iirst installment of rails for the
road has been ordered and con-
tracts for grading Avill be let within
: monrth. It is observed however
- hat a bonus of $35000 has been
. -Tfiked of San Antonio and so far
: the people of that burg have not
put ' up the amount. So it can
-carcely be said that the project is
. issiired that is. if compliance on
.the part of San Antonio be . a sine
- -qua non. It has been hinted that
his proposed line may have an eye
-in the direction of Brownsville so
if there is anything in it this place
snav be interested.
Fifty thousand claims for pen-
sions from those who served in the
late war with Spain have been iij
'2d at Washington. And tmlf re-
minds one of the recent remark
made by President Roosevelt that
'there was not enough of that war
?to go around." Thee seems to have
3been more than he thought there
tsras since only the disabled ones
are supposed to apply for pensions.
There will doubtless be enough pen-
-ion money to go around.
There was no need for Hon. J.
BDibrell to assure the democracy
til the fifteenth district of his loyal-
iiy. It was never doubted by
-Judge DibrelPs numerous admirer;
