HOUSEHOLD NOTES.
" A salve for burns is made of a
pint of linseed oil a piece of beeswax
the size of an es and a tables-
poonful of turpentine. Heat the
oil and beeswax together until the
latter is dissolved and stir the
turpentine in while it is cooling. If
you have no salve read- put linseed
dfl on the burn until you prepare
it. Very serious burns have been
curedby the simple remedy with-
out leaving a scar.
If a -limb should be cut vind
bleeding badly raise and hold it
high in order that the blood current
may be retarded. A slower move-
ment of the blood means that it
will clot more readily.
..Tceisalso excellent for causing
the cessation of bleeding as it causes
the vessels to contract. Pressure is
very useful. For a cut artery (ar-
terial blood is bngnt red and ilows
very quickly in spurts or a thin
stream) press in abroadarea above
tlffi- wound on the side next the
heart. Blood from the veins is
darker and comes slowly. Apply
the pressure on the side farthest
from the heart. Never give stimu-
lants until bleeding has entirely
stopped.
This is .the time of year to make
sure thatrour wells and cisterns
are not infected by drainage or from
any other cause..
For bathing neither hot nor cold
water should be used exclusively.
It is well to take a hot bath at night
and a cold plunge in the morning.
Xo skin can be really clean without
a daily bath.
Cure for Neuralgia. One-Half
drachm of salamoniac 1 ounce of
comphor water. Dose: One tea-
spoonful every ten minutes. This
is never known to fail.
4 To Get a Brilliant Polish on
Stoves. Mix a little turpentine
with Zebra black lead; it removes
all grease from kitchen stoves easily
and gives a brillant polish.
Articles of food that are damp or
juicy should never be left in paper.
Paper is simply a compound of
rtfgs glue lime and similar sub-
stances with acids and chemicals
mixed and when damp is unfit to
touch things that are to be eaten.
RECIPES.
Mocha Cream Wash the salt
from a cup of butter and beat to a
cream. Then beat in gradually
two cups and a half of powdered
sugar and coffee extract to taste.
Two cups of granulated sugar boiled
with half a cup of clear black cof-
fee decoction to the thread degree
and cooled are often used instead
of the powdered sugar.
Mocha Tart Bake a spongecake
mixture in two round layer-cake
pans. Spread mocha cream between
the layers and upon the outside of
the cake. Score the cake in pieces
for serving. Pipe With the remainder
of the cream. The top is often
decorated with piping and candied
cherries and the cream on the sides
covered thickly with graced
cocoanut.
Com Chowder A delicious corn
chowder is substantial enough for
the chief course at a family lunch-
eon. Cut enough corn from the
cob to make a pint adding it to a
quart of milk thickened with one
ounce each of butter and flour
melfed together. Bring these in-
gredients to a boil stirring in then
the beaten yolks of two eggs. Have
some toasted crackers ready and
place in the bottom of the tureen.
Pourtbe chowder over them and
serve very hot.
