first time in months Bethlehem Steel
waa the center of attraction in Wall
etreet. A break of $18 a share in
it tollowing manifest weakness yes-
terday checked what had the ap-
pearance of a strong upward mnove-
ment tn the general list. Bthlehem
stock came out in considerable vol-
ume for that issue, but what at-
tracted most attenuon was the fuel
no inerease of dividends could be

the National Ginners association in-
dicate 11,141,000 bales ginned to Jan.
14, against 10,762,000 bales to cor-
responding date last year, or about
56,000 bales for the last period,
against 116,000 one year ago, the
market declined sharply owing to
the fear of increased submarine ac-
tivity.
According to press advices from
Washington today, Germany is said
to be building 1000 submarines and
proposes to increase submarine ac-
tivity to the maximum. The Prus-
sian diet urged Thursday that the
operations of the submarines be in-
creased to the utmost

via Loondon, states that more than
1000 suzmarines nre now in course

from these developments the cotton

above the close of the day before, but
broke and declined rapidly, until at
the close the market was from 26 to
21 points below the opening.
Spots were lower also, being 18
points off at Austin and Dallas, 10 off
at Houston and 11 up at Liverpool
and others unchanged. Spot sales
were merely nominal. Liverpool Is
due to open 10 points up.
The national ginners* report, made
public Friday, showed 11,140.008 bales
ginned.
The weekly report showed into eight
$05,966 bales as compared with 801,-
151 in 1818 and 5$$.161 in 1816: epin
