Acala cotton early in May, treating-
seed for four acres with Ceresan
and leaving seed for the fifth un-
treated. The differenae in the two
plots was easily distinguished by a
casual observer. The tight black-
land makes a good stand difficult,
and it seems profitable to use Cere-
san to insure the stand.
“After the first squares put on
there was no rain and I plowed
only twice, being careful not to
disturb the roots. Lack of moisture
reduced the yield.

civil service and to the postoffice
work.
In addition to his work in the
postoffice, Mr. Barney also served
for about fifteen years on the local
civil service, board, being secretary
of it most of the time. He just re-
cently resigned this post, when it
became known that he would prob-
ably be made postmaster, as it is
unlawful for the postmaster to hold
a position on the civil service board.
Civic Activities.
The new postmaster is also active
in Ennis civic life, being a member
of the Lions Club, the Ennis Cham-
ber of Commerce, the Masonic
Lodge, and the Methodist church.
He is married to the former Miss
Katherine Wilson, also an Ennis
girl, and an oddity of his promotion
to postmaster is that it comes on
his thirtieth wedding anniversary,
as they were married on March 1,
1910.
Mr. and Mrs. Barney have three
children, George. H (“Pete”), Jr.,
who is also a member of the Ennis
office staff, being a clerk; Robert,
who is a student at the University
of Texas; and Mrs. Katherine Bar-
ney Hamilton, also of Eimis.

Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Mizell, whose
home was recently destroyed by
fire, were honored with a miscel-
laneous shower Thursday night in
the educational building of thie
First Baptist Church. The enter-
tainment was sponsored by the
ladies Auxiliary of the First Bap-
tist church.
The Rev. A. J. Kirkland, pastor
of the church, delivered an address
on the “Value of Friends.”
Punch and cake were served to
about sixty guests.
esch Sons & Co., a mercantile com-
pany. i
He continued to be associated with
this firm until they discontinued
business operations in 1919. Then
from 1919 to 1927, he was in va-
rious positions in Ennis. In 1927,
he became associated with the
First National Bank, where he was
vice-president.
But now the man who celebrates
three-score years today is known
as Joe Jolesch, the insurance man.
He has been in the insurance busi-
ness since March 1932.
Mr. Jolesch was married here to
the former Miss Mamie Cerf, and
they have two sons, William, who
lives in Fort Worth, where he is
publicity director of radio station
WBAP, and Edwin, who is at-
tending college at the University
of Denver in Denver, Colo.
It is no small wonder, either,
why Mr. Jolesch has come, to be as
beloved as he is, for he is known
as the type of civic leader who will
serve on all committees that he is
asked to serve. on—and serve well.
Which, of course, makes it natural
for him to be a director of the
Shamber of Commerce and a mem-
ber of the Lions Club.
What more fitting occasion could
there be to pay tribute to such a
man than on his sixtieth: birthday
—The Ennis News salutes Joe Jol-
esch.

Farmer,” which tells about
project.
The article is as follows:
color when other cotton nearly
wilts, and is easy to pick though it
does not fall out of burs easily, in
contrast to cotton hard to pick due
to long burs.
“Despite the lack of rain, the
yield was 250 pounds per acre, class-
ed as strict middling with a staple
length of 1 3-32 inches. I was
awarded a $100 scholarship in the
statewide cotton production con-
test.”
The time is limited in which En-
nisites may see the art exhibit
which is being sponsored by the
Alamo and David Crockett P.-T.
; A.’s, officials of the two organiza-
' tions reminded today.
For the exhibit, which includes
150 reproductions of the world’s
most noted masterpieces, is to1 end
Friday. It has been open from
3 to 5 p. m. each day this week,
and Friday is the last day.
Good crowds have been in attend-
ance at the exhibition, which is
for the purpose of raising money
for purchasing pictures for the
two schools, officials state. But
they want to remind that Friday
is the last day to be sure that
everyone who wished to see the
exhibit will do so, before it is too
late.
The officials also reminded that
a hostess committee is on hand at
all times at the exhibit to explain
the pictures. Admissions is 10 cents
1 for adults, and 5 cents for children
and the exhiibt is being held at
the Alamo school.
