Proper Diet Prevents
Dreaded Pellagra
Austin, Texas, March 11.—Pell-
agra, although not a communicable
disease, is one of great concern
to public health officials in Texas
and other Southern States. The
disease is caused by the lack of
certain essential foods, and as it
comes on slowly, it may not be
recognized until the victim begins
to have the more serious symptoms
such as sore mouth, stomach

Easter Seal Sale
Begins This Week
Dallas, Texas, March 11.—The
fifteenth annual Easter Seal Sale
ct the Texas Society for Crippled
Children was inaugurated this
vreek with the mailing throughout
Texas of 850,000 sheets of the
colorful seals. Proceeds from the
sale of the seals to finance the
society’s numerous services to the
handicapped youngsters of the
state. 121
In a brief summary, the society
points out how many ways each
dollar is put to work for the bene-
fit of less fortunate children. It
states that the cerebral palsy pro-
gram has surpassed all expecta-
tions, with treatment centers hav-
ing been established throughout
the state. An informational li-
brary also has been established
to further acquaint parents of the
cerebral palsied and interested lay-
men with the problems of treating
these small victims. In conjunction
with this service, one of the great-
est bottlenecks in carrying out the
program, the lack of trained per-
sonnel, is being alleviated by
scholarships for the training of
physio speech and occupational
therepists in the treatment of the
cerebral palsied.
All of this is in addition to the
other services of providing crutch-
es, wheelchairs, transportation,
hospitalization, special education
and rehabilitation to crippled
youngsters. The sheltered work-
shop maintained by the society has
been enlarged and its products
are being sold with profit to the
handicapped.
“Texas must open its hearts and
purses in proportion to the ever-
increasing work being done by the
Texas Society for Crippled Chil-
dren,” Roscoe L. Thomas, Dallas,
president of the society, said.
“Each additional project under-
taken by the society opens a door
to children to whom help previous-
ly has been unavailable. We are
vanced stages pellagra may be
come so severe as to not only
cause physical suffering but seri-
ously affect the mind.”
Pellagra is not contagious and
it can be prevented entirely by in-
cluding the right kinds of foods
in the daily diet. These essential
foods are milk, fresh meat, whole

trouble, and reddening and scaling
of the skin.
“When these symptoms appear,
the disease has been present for
some time,” states Dr. George W.
Cox, State Health Officer. “The
longer an individual has pellagra
the harder it is to cure. It is ad-
visable, therefore, to watch for
the early symptoms such as ner-
vousness, indigestion, and burning j
of the hands and feet, and if these
symptoms appear, treatment should
be instituted at once. In its ad-

the home of their leader, Mrs.
R. L. Daniel, Wednesday, March
3.
The occasion was to celebrate
second birthday of the troop.
Musical and vocal selections
were presented by the girls.
Mary Frances Eddins was
selected by the troop as nominee
for May Queen.
Mrs. Daniel, leader of the troop,
was presented a gift of appre-
ciation for her able and efficient
work with the troop.
President Kearney Marie Wil-
liams lighted two tall candles
which were placed on either side
of the birthday cake, then each
girl having completed her year
with the troop lighted and placed
a small candle on the cake.
The birthday cake was cu% and
served with ice cream to 15 mem-
bers present with Mrs. Nev H,
Williams, co-leader, assisting.
SAND, Public Enemy No. 1 to housewives, is also the No. 1 menace to engines
during the windy season. Your carburetor air cleaner and breather cap screen
can hold only a limited amount. When they are full of sand your engine
cannot operate properly. It will burn too much gas because part of the air is
choked off. To drive your car in this condition will give the same result as
driving with the choke out—wasted fuel.
