crew of foamen gimnors had obtain-

and had not .given a thought to

bers of them about the harbor.
In addition to being yoiuiggwritos

than I've ever been since booauM
there wasn't a man or boy on board
that could teach me anything about

was a&cmt 800 jmrdi Irom the noacli.
The only reason why I turned
around then was became I heard a
lot of noise from ihcbeach.
When I turned I saw about a
hundred naked natirot and all of
the fellow from our ship lined up
an the beach at the edge of the wa-
ter jumping up and down and wav-
ing their arms at me and yelling
with all their might. But I saw
something more important than
that There were it seemed to me
about a million huge wet and shiny
shark fins between me and the boach.
Some of them weren't more than
ten yards from me.
I stopped and trod water and
nervously slapped tho surface of tho
water with ray hands. I noticed
that when I slapped the wator par-
ticularly hard the sharks that were
nearest to me edged back and cir-
cled at a greater distance from me.
So I kept on slapping the wator.
The sharks were waiting for mo
to get tired and they took it easy.
Forty natives put out after me in
one of those sixty foot long and two
foot wide canoes with the outrigger
arrangement familiar in the south
soas and in the bow of the boat and
directing thorn was an old quarter-
master from a British trading
schooner in the harbor.
"Splash keep a-splashing you
Yankee pup idiot!" he bawled at me
as me canoe approacnea wncrc xj
was in the middle of the semicircle
of waiting sharks.
I was a good deal scared but as
the canoe approached I noticed that
all of the natives that weren't help-
ing to pull the canoe were leaning
over the side and slapping and
churning the water with all their
might and main. That settled it.
The sharks dispersed like a bunch
of stampeded mountain goats and I
was hauled into the canoe and scold-
ed by tho British quartermaster for
my folly until wo pulled up on the
boach. That was my first experi-
ence with tho cowardice of sharks.
