replied with a tariff cutting
scheme of their own. It comes
into effect in 1960.

the House. He is a former Lub-
bock County attorney and assist-
ant district attorney in Lubbock.
"I am not running for office
against anyone,1* he said. "The
Texas choice is a choice of direc-

of public positions of leadership
used solely for the personal am-
bitions of the incumbent," his
statement said.

have reference to any specific of-
fice holder when he made the re-

Waggoner Carr of Lubbock is the
first announced candidate in the
1960 race for Attorney General of
Texas. -
Carr announced formally
. Wednesday in a statement dis-
tr bated to newsmen here.
He followed this with a press
conference held by telephone from
Lubbock in which he said he is
in the race regardless of what in-
cumbent Will Wilson decidea to do.
Wilson reportedly plans to an-
nounce his Intentions in mid-
January.
Carr, 41. said he decided on the
race after considering a cam-
campaign for governor.
. “I’m a lawyer and have a nat-
ural attraction for the office of
• a toney general," he said.
Former Secretary of State Tom
Reavley and Diet. Atty. Lea Proc-
ter, both of Austin; Dallas Dist.
Atty. Henry Wade; Houston Dist.
Atty. Dan Walton and former
Waco Dist. Atty. Tom Moore also
have been mentioned as possible
candidates for the office.
Carr said he feels he can fi-
nance and win “a hard cam-
paign."
Asked who he thinks his oppo-
nents will be, Carr said, “I don’t
know who will be in the race.
This is political season in Texas

polities, I think there will be some
activity."

Dies After Accident
AUBREY (Special! - Donnie
Haren. ULyear-old son of former
Aubrey residents, died in a Phil-
lips Hospital shortly after ad-
mittance Wednesday.
He suffered head injuries and a
possible skull fracture in a motor-
bike and car collision in Phillips.
His parents are Mr. and Mrs.
Hodges Haren of Phillips.
Funeral services were to be to-
day at 3 p.m. at Phillips. Attend-
ing the funeral were his grand-
mothers, Mrs. J. C. Haynie and
Mrs. Pearl Haren; a great-uncle.
Sam Bodges, all of Aubrey. and
Mr. and Mrs. Sy Lockhart of
.Den too. aunt and uncle of the
boy
Young Haren is also survived
by two brothers and two sisters.

AEC Okays Grant
For -Studies At

WASHINGTON (AP)-Twp Tex-
as educational institutions were
included Thursday in 36 universi-
ties and colleges getting approval
of grants from the Atomic Energy
Commission.
The AEC said the grants,
amounting to 81.800,000, are to be
used for purchase of laboratory
equipment needed to start or ex-
pand nuclear educational pro-
grams in physical sciences and
engineering.
The grants to Texas institutions
Included 855,440 for Southern
Methodist University, Dallas, and
17,420 for Texas ABM College.

Lange, Janet Gaynor, Harold

AUSTIN (AP) -The Austin
American - Statesman announced
today that Jan. 1 the single copy
price of its morning and afternoon
newspapers would be increased
from five to 10 cents a copy. The
Sunday American-Statesman will
be 20 cents.
Delivery price of the news-
papers will be increased 18 cents
a month, the notice in today's
American said.
The Sunday American-States-
man now sella fof 13 cents a copy.
The carrier delivered price for ei-
ther the morning er afternoon edi-
